On this day in 1944, an 8 year old Dutch Jewish girl arrived at Auschwitz with her mother where they were murdered on arrival. Her father perished in Tsjechowitz (Auschwitz sub-camp) on the 31 Dec 1944. Her name was Klara Susanna de Vries

Americans still believe they live in a democracy, which is rather sweet. The president has just explained, out loud and to applause, that the only election result he will accept is the one where his side wins, and the country has responded by nodding politely and going back to arguing about the price of petrol.
In a few weeks they are going to have a crisis dropped into their laps of a size nobody has ever seen before, and they will be absolutely astonished, because apparently being told in advance doesn't count.

On this day in 1942, a 15 year old Dutch Jewish girl arrived at Auschwitz alone where she was murdered. Her sister perished in the camp in Sep 1942 and mother perished in Stutthof in Oct 1944. Her brother survived. Her name Hedwig Falkenstein
