The Pentagon is treating a rash of freezer malfunctions that affected refrigeration and freezer units at commissaries at several U.S. military bases in August as a suspected cyberattack, according to four officials familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters. The Pentagon said a Cyber Command unit is “working in close coordination with interagency and law enforcement partners” in the ongoing investigation. At least six on base commissaries were affected in late August, per Reuters’ review of base social media posts. In at least one case, the cooling units’ temperatures were raised overnight, resulting in spoiled food. Fort Huachuca, Arizona, posted that its freezer “went into defrost mode where it heated up all the food.” One official said investigators have been in touch with French counterparts about a similar attack that hit more than 350 French supermarkets earlier this month. Upcoming weather pattern: Parade of western troughs = downstream ridging east of the Rockies and much above normal temperatures into November. Next 10-days may look like the next 100-days with ongoing El Niño.

In the event there are outages on Anderson Island tonight please know that outages may be extended due to the fact that Pierce County has announced that the service will remain suspended for the entirety of tomorrow (Monday, October 26th) due to a mechanical issue. The county noted that the replacement parts needed to fix the ferry are not available domestically, so riders are being advised to make alternative plans as repair work continues. The usual ferry on that route (the Christine Anderson) is currently in dry dock for routine maintenance until November 6th, leaving only the Steilacoom II in service, which is the vessel now experiencing the mechanical breakdown.

At approximately 7:53 AM today, crews were dispatched to the 6400 block of 224th St E in the Spanaway area after a passerby called 911 to report a motor home on fire. Firefighters arrived to find the motor home fully involved in flames. The fire had also extended to a nearby garage and another motor home. Crews brought the fire under control at 8:16 AM and fully extinguished it at 8:37 AM. During overhaul operations, firefighters located a deceased adult male inside the motor home where the fire was initially reported. The cause of death has not been determined. The Pierce County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory scientists performing a routine helicopter observation flight at Mount Hood noticed that a seasonal meltwater pond at the base of the Coalman Glacier was significantly larger than in previous years. The pond lies in a basin bounded by Crater Rock, cliffs extending down from the summit, and Devil’s Kitchen, an earthen berm composed of hydrothermally altered rock and glacial moraine material. Devil’s Kitchen is a long-lived feature and appears stable based on current observations. The pond’s water volume is unknown but is estimated to be on the order of ~50,000 cubic meters, roughly equivalent to 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools. A water sample collected last week had a provisional measured pH of 4, which is similar to the pH of black coffee, indicating mildly acidic conditions. If all the water were released suddenly, it could generate a debris flow down the White River with the potential to reach the Highway 35 bridge. Topography would prevent the flow from traveling down the Sandy River or toward Timberline and Government Camp. Based on current estimates of the pond’s water volume, impacts to populated areas are not expected. USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory scientists are working with the U.S. Forest Service, the National Weather Service, Portland Mountain Rescue, and other agencies to make additional measurements and assess the stability of the meltwater pond. CVO will issue further updates as conditions warrant. The Cascades Volcano Observatory update for Friday, October 23, 2026: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington were at normal background levels. Over the past week, there were small earthquakes detected at Mount St. Helens. Field crews conducted a gravity survey at Mount Hood, installed sensors at Spirit Lake near Mount St. Helens, and made improvements to monitoring stations at Mount Adams. Analysis of routine gas flight measurements at Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood indicate normal background levels of degassing. 📷 1: View of Mount Hood from the parking lot at Timberline looking north.
