ten years ago today i published my first post on crypto and law 👇🏼
i was at the very beginning of the journey i’m still on today. kinda wild

idk how i missed live coding music, which seems to have been going on for over a decade. now forking strudel and becoming an algodj. goal: play a set in berghain.
Freedom Browser uses Colibri as trustless RPC with privacy mode enabled.

PAP is in production today.
Freedom Browser (@heckerhut) resolves ENS names through colibri with PAP enabled. When you open a .eth site, the lookup is verified against Ethereum on your own device, and no single RPC provider sees every name you look up. 👇️
Freedom Browser creates an alternative vision for what the open web could be: user-owned, peer-to-peer, non-custodial, self-sovereign, private, secure, open-source, censorship resistant.
When Apple released its browser in January 2003 , the web was dominated by Microslop's Internet Explorer. Steve's vision was do call their browser "Freedom". 23 years later, it's finally happening.
Update on Freedom Browser
Today we shipped v0.8.5
Headline features:
- web3:// url support for contract-hosted apps (shoutout to @z0r0zzz )
- adblocking with block lists served via @ethswarm
- lots of daily-driver features like address bar search
- new wallet types like @safe , @Ledger and signing with any device via openlv (shoutout to @LucemansNL )
There are a ton of more features:
- @ethereum and @gnosis_ light clients (shoutout to @dirkjaeckel )
- natively embedded @radicle node (incl. windows) and a new window.radicle API that let's websites talk to your radicle node (think decentralized github)
- embedded @torproject node
- support for @tezos domains (.tez)
- and many small things (download manager, permissions for webcam & microphone, remappable shortcuts, private windows....)
Just had a call with @jchaskin22 from @ethereumfndn regarding Freedom Browser. Super encouraging to see this level of support for app builders in the ecosystem. Also, exciting to hear what EF is cooking in terms of CROPS.
Freedom for iPhone now runs 5 p2p nodes in parallel
1) Ethereum light client (myotis)
2) Gnosis light client (myotis)
3) Swarm
4) IPFS
5) Radicle
can't wait to release it :-)
The next web is peer to peer. Now is the time to build for it. Freedom browser makes it easy to browse and deploy to the decentralized web without gateways.
In a client-server model, an operator sits at the center and controls access. In Swarm, chunks of data move across peers, and the protocol coordinates storage and communication without a central gatekeeper.
To participate, you run the software. You let yourself in.

excited to see that radicle is getting the attention it deserves
natively supported in freedom browser - of course
GitHub went down, so I went looking for a decentralized alternative and found @radicle, a peer-to-peer code forge, and contributed a quick fix to test the flow.
Contributing via a native patch instead of a PR is wild🌱
Thanks for making it happen @cloudhead @lftherios
👏 @heckerhut & freedom browser

I can not stress enough how important the policy work will be in the next few months (up to the next 2 years ) for the legal assessment of basic crypto primitives like a self-hosted wallet and a smart contract in the EU & UK
let’s build an Ethereum privacy browser

i've been told this has been going viral in right wing twitter so i gave it a read
his core claim: prior generations inherited free "social capital" (trusted neighbors, functional schools, predictable careers, a safe public square) alongside rising financial capital.
that social capital has since collapsed, so young people must now buy back privately, at high cost, what used to be free: private school instead of a trusted public one, paid childcare instead of a stay at home parent or community network, a degree as a mandatory screening tool. prices fell on non-essentials but rose sharply on essentials (housing, education, childcare, healthcare) and this shows up in stats as progress even though families feel squeezed.
it's basically feminist marxist critique wearing a tradwife dress.
gdp doesn't count unpaid domestic labor, care work gets commodified once women enter the workforce. this argument is decades old (federici, folbre, marilyn waring's "if women counted"). most marxists agree with this and marx famously warned about this happening in his time.
capital vol. 1, chapter 15. marx's argument was that the value of a man's labor power was priced to cover the reproduction of his whole family, not just himself. once machinery let capitalists pull women and children into wage labor too, that same total family subsistence got spread across four wage earners instead of one. so each individual wage drops, the family as a whole works far more hours to land at roughly the same standard of living, and what looks like expanded opportunity (women and kids "entering the workforce") is actually capital using the whole family to depreciate the value of labor power overall. four people's working lives get used up to buy what one man's wage used to buy.
there's a couple of places where he's a bit ahistorical, like the us did not always have only english speaking schools until ww1 with english only laws. the bigger issue though is that he never explains how we got here. he just states "social trust collapsed" like it's weather. no account of who built the postwar commons, who dismantled it, or why.
the irony is that it was neoliberals that brought forth the gdp worship, a tradition way closer to his own politics than to the feminist marxists he's (unknowingly?) mimicking.

Replying to @heckerhut
I really love and support the Freedom Browser. Actually using it daily!
For a future art project I want to use a .tez @tezosdomains
Can you please implement Freedom Browser to resolve .tez natively?
Thanks!

i wish those well-meaning boomers killing the open web right now would understand this
very nice real world use case: encrypted, publicly verifiable digital voting
