✊✊Union power for the POWER Act!
✊ We’re fighting to put the POWER back into New Yorkers hands! The POWER Act would allow consumers, workers, non-profits and small businesses to directly sue companies for unfair practices, rather than rely on City enforcement alone.

Last week, Freelancers Union joined our allies in the labor movement to rally for the POWER Act and a simple principle: no worker should have to accept unfair treatment simply because the company on the other side is bigger and more powerful. For freelancers, this imbalance is all too familiar. Independent workers often face powerful corporations alone, with little bargaining power or recourse when things go wrong. And as AI transforms the creative economy, artists and other creative workers face new threats to their work, livelihoods, and rights. The POWER Act would help shift that balance by giving New Yorkers more tools to challenge unfair and abusive business practices. We're proud to stand with our labor allies in this fight. Every worker deserves the power to stand up to corporate abuse, whether they're employed full-time or working independently.

More than 100 elected officials have joined me in calling on parking lot and garage owners across New York City: Don’t give ICE a place to operate. Don’t rent to them. Tell them they’re not welcome. Last week, ICE agents shot Oscar Belgal in the neck in Marble Hill while his 5-year-old son sat in the car. They had been staging nearby in a private parking lot. Our city laws keep ICE off public property. Now, we’re calling on private property owners to do the same. One garage on Morton Street already removed ICE vehicles after neighbors spoke out. Every owner has that power.

Tech should work for New Yorkers, not against them. The complaint portal we rolled out alongside @helloDCWP for NYC's NEW Click-to-Cancel rule represents a prime example of this belief put into action. If you have a stubborn subscription, your first stop is nyc.gov/clicktocancel. We'll help guide you through the rest.

Bureaucracy cannot be the enemy of getting shit done. In that spirit, we’re introducing legislation, in partnership with @NYCMayor and @HelloDCWP, to cut red tape and empower the city to act faster against unconscionable business practices.

When New Yorkers get ripped off, they should have the power to fight back. We’re introducing the POWER Act to give workers, tenants, consumers, small businesses and nonprofits a legal pathway to take on unfair and deceptive business practices. A tenant shouldn’t have to watch a landlord wrongfully withhold their security deposit. A consumer shouldn’t have to accept predatory loan terms. And New Yorkers shouldn’t have to rely on government alone to hold powerful corporations accountable. We’re putting power back where it belongs: in the hands of New Yorkers. nytimes.com/2026/10/06/nyreg…

This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss. The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes. Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment. To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.

Important read from @helloDCWP Commissioner @saalevine on how New York City is reclaiming worker power in the age of AI ⬇️
In 1902, women on the Lower East Side organized a boycott when the price of kosher meat jumped 50%. How do we build collective power when every consumer sees a different price—and every worker a different wage? My thoughts, now in @thenation.
