For decades, people with ME/CFS struggled for recognition while researchers struggled for funding. Then came Covid. My latest for @business on how Long Covid is transforming the science of infection-associated chronic illness. 🎁🔗👇 bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Yikes: New study estimates that three out of four former NFL players who died between 2008 and 2023 most likely had CTE in their brains at death. CTE is caused by multiple blows to the head. nytimes.com/2026/10/28/scien…

A new study by AARP finds that “family caregivers — people helping disabled, chronically ill or elderly adults — now spend an average $11,508 out of pocket annually. That's ~60% more than 5 years ago and up to 31% of a caregiver's income, on average.” npr.org/2026/10/28/nx-s1-601…

Our BA.3.2.2 study is now published in Nature Microbiology! Counterintuitively, we found that ancestral-strain immune imprinting protects against BA.3.2.2 through IGHV3-53/66 Class 1 antibodies, helping explain why BA.3.2.2 selectively infects children. doi.org/10.1038/s41564-026-0…

Hospital units dedicated to treating the nation's sickest kids are disappearing nationwide. In the past year alone, hospitals have closed pediatric intensive care units for critically ill kids in Montana, Oregon, and Missouri. Overnight hospital wings for kids have also shuttered in Illinois and California. cbsnews.com/news/pediatric-i…

"The fast-moving Ebola outbreak in Congo has reached 10,000 confirmed cases.. It is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history and nearly half of the 10,060 confirmed to have the virus have died.. The outbreak declared in May is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment.. It has spread farther across Africa than any previous Ebola outbreak, reaching three regions with cases recorded in Kenya and Nigeria as well.. In Congo, the disease has spread to 66 health zones across eight provinces.. most of the first cases were confirmed long after people started showing symptoms or after traveling.." After traveling.. ’Congo’s Ebola outbreak tops 10,000 cases as authorities race to slow the spread in African countries’ nbcnews.com/world/africa/con…

This is playing with fire. Minks and ferrets have such humanlike lung cells that they’re the standard for testing human flu transmission. (Cows aren’t!) An H5N1 epidemic raging in a mink farm is basically the plot for Dr. Evil tries to spark a pandemic. Luck isn’t a plan.
Here’s something you should know about minks: They have lungs and airways remarkably similar on a cellular level to those of people. They’ve spread flus and infected humans before with COVID-19. Right now, bird flu is spreading on a Utah farm filled with thousands of them… 🧵

Is “moderate” #alcohol drinking really safe? A new analysis in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs confirms it is not. Drinking an average of 14 drinks a week (two a day) was associated with a 1 in 25 lifetime risk of dying from 🍺 alcohol-related causes. At around seven drinks a week, the risk was about 1 in 1,000. It rose sharply above one drink a day, for both men and women. The researchers found no protective effect of #alcohol at low levels. Even about one drink a day was linked to higher risk of death from #cirrhosis, oral and oesophageal cancer. These are population-level estimates, not individual predictions. doi.org/10.15288/jsad.25-004…

In 2024, I investigated why Biden Admin had slow-walked response to #H5N1 outbreak in dairy cows. The answer: @USDA let farmers not test cows, at dairy lobby's behest. vanityfair.com/news/story/in… Strong 🧵on evolution of H5N1 risks: "This should have ended 2 years ago." 👇
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now. A dangerous and preventable situation. Let me explain. nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5n… 1/

Yesterday, a nurse was killed and a health worker severely injured after they were attacked while responding to an #Ebola alert in the town of Bafwasende, Tshopo province, #DRC. Our deepest condolences go to the family, colleagues and friends of the lost nurse. We also wish a swift and full recovery to his injured colleague who remains hospitalized. Everyone working to protect communities from this deadly disease must be able to work in dignity and safety. Healthcare must always be protected.

“Adults account for about two-thirds of the 1,300 cases reported by the state.. Until now, measles was rarely seen among adults.”
"[The hospitalized adult patients in Pennsylvania] are weak and disoriented with meningitis, sepsis or pneumonia. Some have bacterial infections in their blood, kidney failure or hepatitis.. Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak is defying epidemiologists’ expectations and historical trends: Adults account for about two-thirds of the 1,300 cases reported by the state.. Until now, measles was rarely seen among adults.. Pennsylvania’s outbreak is also sending people to the hospital at almost twice the rate seen in other recent outbreaks. Six people diagnosed with measles — four of them adults — have died, according to state health officials and local coroners. An infant, born with the disease after his mother was sick during pregnancy, was among the deaths.. The toll showcases how adults over age 20 are among the groups at greatest risk for serious complications.. Children under 5 and people with compromised immune systems are also at high risk for severe illness.." I believe the number of immunocompromized adults is increasing. This is basically a classical dangerous Gain of Function (dGoF) experiment. I wish the US government would shut it down. A while ago, Stacey Schultz-Cherry and I wrote a commentary (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…), that ends with this sentence:
US: Bird flu has been spreading for around two months on a Utah mink farm holding thousands of animals. None have been culled, workers aren't being monitored, and the USDA says it doesn't regulate mink. So thousands of animals are exposed, workers could be at risk, and nobody seems to be taking responsibility. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…
