The little Ghanaian boy who was killed in the US has suddenly caused a whole uproar, and now some of you are quick to emphasise that he was Ghanaian, African, not Black.
But when a Black person is killed in America, you expect Africans to rally behind the cause, join the conversations, condemn the injustice and stand in solidarity with you under the banner of “Black Lives Matter.” Then we’re all one, right? We’re all Black?
But when the victim is African, suddenly there’s a distinction. Suddenly, he’s African, not Black.
You cannot keep demanding solidarity based on shared Black identity when it suits you, only to draw the line when Africans expect that same solidarity in return.
