Then why are you *talking about* needing to act? Why partake in a language-based platform if thought/emotion/meaning-making has no relationship to action?
they do something about it men don’t need therapy because they’re built different (literally) male and female brains are wired for different stress responses. when a woman is sad, her brain's language centers activate, while when a man is sad his motor and planning circuits torn on she processes by talking he processes by acting therapy works for women because it mirrors their emotional processing style: verbal, emotional, recursive, while it fails most men because it forces them into rumination, when what they need is resolution men aren’t helped by sitting still and talking in circles about their feelings, they need a purpose modern therapy is built on feminine logic: passive introspection, linguistic dissection, circular processing, but well adjusted men are driven toward problems to solve and things to do men heal by doing not by feeling more

Curious for others’ thoughts on this thread but I’d say: Therapy involves developing ‘negative capability’, being able to tolerate uncertainty without immediately escaping it. So if pressure for a single session “aha” is coming from the therapist, then they are not good.
God this is real. Especially in therapy— I feel like therapists would keep asking questions about my feelings/behaviors that led me to come up with “answers” that felt satisfying in the moment, but were often not true at all upon later reflection

If from the patient, then that is worthy of exploration. Meaningful therapy involves an engagement with multiplicity of meanings, contradictions, affects, ambivalence, doubt, and not retreating into oversimplified just-so stories.

Psychotherapists: how do you separate signal from noise with regards to theory? IMO - There can be a just-so story quality to much psychotherapy theory. Post-hoc explanations dressed up as

I don’t doubt the utility of body-based therapy approaches, but this line of thinking leaves out a crucial point. Yes, the mind is expressed in the body. But the body is expressed in the mind, too. This sentiment splits off mind from body
Why has modern therapy failed so many people? In the 1950s, Dr. Alexander Lowen made a radical discovery: The root of emotional pain isn’t in your mind—it’s in your body. His work flipped psychology upside down and changed how we understand trauma and healing forever 🧵

pretty, pretty good encapsulation of the space that meaningful psychotherapy can open up

The great @oliverburkeman on AI, creativity, and psychotherapy: "The point about a good novel produced by a human (or a song, or painting, or dare I say it, an email newsletter) isn’t that only a human *could ever* have produced it. It’s that a human *did in fact* produce it."
