๐ย Benue State has several laws in place to address GBV, but customary laws often hinder enforcement and progress.
โ๏ธDelays in investigations and prosecution are common, especially in cases involving minors. While informal justice systems are widely used, they are often ineffective and can promote settlements that undermine formal legal processes.
๐๏ธOnly five facilities are available to support GBV survivors in Benue, a state with over six million people. More than half of the respondents said they are unaware of these services.
๐ขย Benue State uses IEC materials to raise awareness about GBV, but more than half of the respondents said they havenโt seen or heard them. Additionally, materials for people with disabilities are limited.
โฆย In 2023, Benueโs Ministry of Womenโs Affairs spent only โฆ40.9 per person due to a limited budget.
Benue State Government (@HyacinthAlia), use the #WomanityIndex to build a stronger, more effective system to prevent and respond to GBV.

Attention! ๐
As we gear up to release the Womanity Index 2024 edition, over the next three days, we will be sharing the state-by-state aggregated data from the 2023 edition.
The state aggregates are based on field data collected from each of the 36 states and the FCT on 13 core questions related to GBV prevention and response. The survey questions are based on some indicators across four of the five indices: Laws and Policies, Access to Legal Justice, Support Services, and Information and Awareness.
Let's start with the data aggregates for Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, and Delta States.

This number emphasizes the alarming scale of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Nigeria!
Given that many victims do not report GBV due to stigma, fear, or lack of trust in law enforcement, this number likely represents only a fraction of actual cases.
This statistic is a call to action for the government and other stakeholders to intensify their commitment to preventing and responding to GBV in Nigeria.
Through the Womanity Index, you can hold your state government accountable for their responsibility to effectively and holistically prevent and respond to GBV in your state.

๐ 17% is the current percentage of women representation among Ministers in Nigeria!
In 2023, upon assuming office, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (@officialABAT) appointed 48 Ministers. Since then, Betta Edu, the then Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction (@fmha_pa), was suspended; while Solomon Lalong, the then Minister of Labour and Employment (@LabourMinNG), resigned to move to the Senate. This brought the number of Ministers down to 46.
On October 23, 2024, the President (@NGRPresident) sacked five Ministersโthree of whom were women and appointed seven new Ministers, which included three women. This restored the number of Ministers to 48.
Thus, with eight out of 48, women make up only 17% of the Ministers, translating to a continuous underrepresentation of women in the federal cabinet.
We anticipate when the 35% affirmative action will be achieved in Nigeria, not only for gender balance but in advancing a Nigeria where women are adequately represented in political leadership, policy-making, and decision making.
