It’s almost like they are trying to have an ‘Event’ without any specific incident, just a purely simulacral sense of eventness to occasion a state of emergency for whatever end. Of course, I’m not naive nor new, this is the pervading despair and anxiety on which modern governance

Earnest take: I think it’s probably not healthy for the practice of democratic self-government that so many people have developed strong rooting interests in elections in countries they don’t live in.

"Carpet bomb them all". Speaking to The Guardian at an event ahead of Israel’s elections, a young Israeli woman called for Palestinians to be forcibly displaced from the Gaza Strip, saying they should be killed if they cannot be removed.

Portugal is practically the only country in Europe doing exclusively peaceful protests Our renting/buying prices are already on par with France/Germany while earning 1/3 What do we get in return? 11 riot vans to beat up 1000 or so people for being gathered outside past 00:30
Carga com cães, gás, balas de borracha, bastonadas. É tudo aquilo que vamos ter de qualquer governo de senhorios. Fixem bem isso. Não há solução para a crise de habitação que não passe por uma revolução.

We are receiving repeated warnings that people linked to Aleksandar Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) may be mobilised to provoke confrontations at around 9 pm tonight, as the first election projections emerge. The students want free, peaceful elections and a result decided at the ballot box. The higher the turnout, the greater Vučić’s fear of defeat — and the greater the risk of deliberate provocations. Vučić and his government have allowed a climate of intimidation and violence to grow. They bear full political responsibility for preventing any further escalation. If SNS-linked groups are deployed to trigger clashes, Vučić must be held accountable. We demand immediate police protection for voters, candidates, students and observers. Serbia’s future must be decided by votes, never by violence.

Część wozów bojowych odjechała, ale funkcjonariusze w pełnym rynsztunku szturmowym i z tarczami przesuwają teraz metalowe płoty coraz dalej w stronę Pałacu Albanija, powiększając strefę buforową wokół komisji. Do końca głosowania została niecała godzina. #SzerbiaVálaszt #WyboryWSerbii #Belgrad #RIK #Serbia #wybory #Vučić

Urgent statement from Serbian Student List issued: We have credible information that SNS is planning to mobilise people around 9 pm, potentially to provoke confrontations. The students are aware of the situation and intend to avoid any clashes, particularly as they have achieved a result that should be acknowledged, whether Vučić chooses to recognise it or not. Please share this message with your international contacts: the students have no interest in violence or confrontation. They have a result to defend, and their priority is to preserve it peacefully. It is important that international partners are aware of the risk of provocation tonight and that any escalation should not automatically be attributed to the students.

This is fucking madness, but She's not the Only Politician doing this, which is why Bills Keep going Up for all of Us, while they get to claim every penny of theirs back (& then some!) as a Business expense, while we're forced to choose whether to eat, or turn the heating on.

the reason moby-dick remains such a vital piece of human art is that it addresses what is probably one of humanity's greatest collective atrocities, the genocide of the whales, with an ambivalence it cannot itself fully articulate. melville is distraught, but he can't explain why

🇫🇷 France Unbowed presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon ripped BFMTV, France's most-watched 24-hour news channel, for its racist coverage live on air during Saturday's march in Paris. Asked what Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu should offer high school protesters, Mélenchon shot back: "I am not the government; go ask them. And you at BFM, start calming down with the racist remarks of all kinds, because it's starting to be enough." As a reporter kept pressing, he added: "Go make your provocations somewhere else... go do your racism on TV and leave us the hell alone." BFMTV, owned by French shipping billionaire Rodolphe Saadé, was rebuked by France's broadcast regulator last November after far-right politician Éric Zemmour cast Algerians and Arab Muslims as a threat on one of its shows without much pushback from its hosts.
🇫🇷 Huge crowds marched peacefully through Paris on Saturday after authorities changed the protest's approved route at the last minute, a move the leftist leader of France Unbowed Jean-Luc Mélenchon called a deliberate attempt to provoke "disorder." Mélenchon said the government switched the route while the country was in shock over Friday's shooting in Trappes, a working-class suburb west of Paris. A gunman there killed a 26-year-old man and wounded several others, including a 12-year-old girl, in what President Emmanuel Macron described as a terrorist and racist act. Mélenchon, the top left-wing candidate in polls for next year's presidential election, also listed what he called a series of provocations by Macron’s government. The march's original starting point was banned. Soldiers from Sentinelle, France's anti-terror patrol force, were posted outside public buildings despite having no crowd-control training. And the Paris police chief told shopkeepers to hire private security. "They are doing absolutely everything to provoke an incident," he said, while praising marchers' "collective discipline." He warned Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to meet protesters' demands before a nationwide general strike called by the CGT, one of France's biggest labor unions, for Nov. 5. "Either Mr. Macron gives in right away, or he will have to do so under much more hazardous conditions," he said. Macron met high school student organizations for the first time Friday, after more than a month of protests, and Lecornu is set to meet them Monday.
