#NASAWebb has detected the distinct signature of water—along with evidence for clouds and haze—on the hot, puffy gas giant planet known as WASP-96 b: webbtelescope.pub/WASP96b

ALT Graphic titled “Hot Gas Giant Exoplanet WASP-96 b Atmosphere Composition, NIRISS Single-Object Slitless Spectroscopy.” The graphic shows the transmission spectrum of the hot gas giant exoplanet WASP-96 b captured using Webb's NIRISS Single-Object Slitless Spectroscopy with an illustration of the planet and its star in the background. The data points are plotted on a graph of amount of light blocked in parts per million versus wavelength of light in microns. A curvy blue line represents a best-fit model. Four prominent peaks visible in the data and model are labeled “water, H 2 O.”

Globs of bright, beautiful dust. New images using data from four retired space telescopes provide a view of dust & gas that fill the space between stars in neighboring galaxies. The particles are exposed in far-infrared and radio light in these photos. go.nasa.gov/3xXZaez

Replying to @SOFIAtelescope
@SOFIAtelescope will be ending operations in just a few months. This means that we will soon have no observatories operating in the far-infrared - the wavelength gap between JWST (which goes out to ~30 microns) and ALMA (which picks up at ~500 microns). We need to fill this gap!
NASA’s SOFIA telescope has provided observations in infrared light & made discoveries about the hidden universe. After a successful eight years of science NASA & its partner @DLR_en will conclude the mission, with operations ending no later than Sept. 30:
