This is going to be the info marketer's decade in software.
Here's my prediction: the indie hacker is about to get crushed by the direct response marketer who learned to ship software.
When I came up, direct response marketers sold ebooks and courses. Not because we loved it. It was the only thing you could build without engineers.
We all wanted to be in software. That's where the leverage was.
The wall was never talent. It was operational. Hire engineers, manage engineers, retain engineers, become a real company.
So the best marketers of my generation stayed put.
That wall is gone.
Now a guy who's spent twenty years learning how to make strangers care can ship a product in a weekend.
You cannot compete with that person on offers. On hooks. On positioning. AI does not hand you those in a tab.
The engineering advantage evaporated.
The marketing advantage didn't.
For twenty years marketers wanted what engineers had.
Now they have it.

This Is Not A Real Business:
I sell info. I coach, consult, mentor, offer services, and licence software.
There's been this slur thrown at the "industry" for years.
"It's not a real business"
And it's completely correct.
And that's the point.
It's getting paid to yap.
I had real businesses.
Three of them.
I worked and exited a real business with 195 people.
Real businesses are hard.
Some very clever folks got into this gig over the years.
And started making it hard.
Hiring managers and CEOs and chiefs of staff.
Hiring big agencies to manage tiny marketing budgets.
Being a biznas man or biznas woman.
They go to conferences where people clap them on the back for how many staff they've hired.
All so very serious.
So let's get this straight.
You're alive during the biggest communications boom in the history of humanity.
Allowing you to pretty much just yap on the internet and get paid millions of dollars.
And you think it's a good idea to make it complicated and into a real business?
Bruh.
In an hour, I'm going to yap on Zoom with some folks in the Society.
And I've got six folks at my office. We're jamming on the Sovereign Model and the Sovereign Path today, and then going to breathwork at 2:00.
We yapped over a lovely dinner last night.
Miss 1 is rocking around the place, stealing people's phones, and the dogs are claiming spaces on the sofa.
No HR to get involved
In two weeks, I'm flying to Rome to hang with eight folks from the Society to Yap.
All me. Yapping with people I like.
I've yapped so much that I've built an AI Replicant of me that's trained to yap 24/7.
No CEO. No COO. No closers. No agency.
Why on earth would I add those things that just get in the way of me yapping?
I work something out.
I offer to help someone Work it out with me.
Put the details in a Google Doc.
Write and record content about the thing I've worked out.
Then send people the Google Doc who are interested
Then help them.
That people both think it's any more difficult than this and don't do anything with the things that they know,
Or make it much more difficult than this by building a a big, unwieldy business around the things they know,
Still boggles my mind
Yap packaging.
It's all it is.
When I'm not yapping, I'm testing new things to yap about in the future.
Even the people who have built these businesses complain about the businesses themselves.
You don't have to.
It's a choice.
Yap.

I already tried ads repeatedly and ROI was always negative
I hired the best people in the industry and ROI was still negative
I think the reason is basic economics:
I compete with VC-funded companies with $100M balance sheets who happily enjoy negative ad ROI if it means growing their user base
They can pay $1 per ad, lose $0.10, make $0.90, and it's still good because it means GROWTH. And growth means being able to raise another $100M for the next round. Then at some point they try push to profitability and IPO!
I can't do that cause I'm self funded, so everything I do has to be profitable
If you're competing for the same ad slot with those companies, you can't economically have positive ROI for very long. For a while yes, not for very long.

I had always thought the self-help mantra of "put a specific timeline on your goal!" was bullshit
Until I learned that it WAS actually bullshit
Specific goal = massively important and absolutely mandatory
BUT...
Specific timeline = unnecessary & does much more harm than good IMO
The reason then "when" should be abandoned is 3-fold:
1) The "when" is completely outside of your control
2) Your mind can only think linearly and cannot incorporate quantum leaps or unknown-future leverage into its current calculations
3) Parkinson's law. Work will expand to fill the time allotted for its completion. Deadlines can cause procrastination or even prompt people to fill their time with trivial matters
So not only is placing a specific timeline on your goal genuinely impossible - but it also could potentially be a LIMITER for how high you could ACTUALLY go within the same timeframe (especially if you are someon who procrastinates or self-sabotages)
So what is the alternative?
Replace your SPECIFIC TIMELINE with a SPECIFIC PROCESS.
Meaning instead of worrying at ALL about "how long" - worry only about what you are doing into your day-to-day actions. And then maximize the amount of effort you expend onto these actions DAILY.
So if your goal is to hit $10k/month in your agency...
Ask yourself "what highest-leverage actions do I need to do on repeat to hit $10k/month in my agency?
And the answer is SEND COLD EMAILS AND CLOSE DEALS.
How long will it take you to hit $10k/mo? You have no fucking clue. Also who cares.
Just send a fuckton of emails DAILY and close those MFs till you're making $10k/month & procuding beautiful offspring with French muses on the beaches of Normandy.
TLDR:
1) Choose specific goal
2) Create gameplan with specific actions
3) GASPEDAL

Friendly tip: If you get a sinking feeling in your gut when you see a client's name on your cell phone...
It's time to let 'em go.
No amount of money is worth that emotional drain. Cut them loose and move on. Your future self will thank you.

“Today women, especially, are sincerely frightened by the idea of becoming just a wife and mother.
Women willingly run from the home, from the spectre of becoming a "glorified prostitute" into the open arms of the corporate employer.
Laughably, we call this process freedom.”

The one form of equality a journalist will always resist is the idea that everyone is now equal to a journalist.
Replying to @kylegrantham
You represent the problem: journalists who think they are the only source of legitimate information. That’s the big lie.
