There is about $9 trillion in 2030-2039 revenue from rolling back OBBBA tax cuts above $400k + adopting Biden’s pretty aggressive Tax the Rich agenda (28% corporate rate, tax unrealized gains, tax cap gains at ordinary rates etc).
These are all very popular and I’d be surprised if the 2028 nominee doesn’t adopt them. Lots of money in the “roll back the tax cuts for the rich” vault.

We recently submitted a comment in response to proposed regulations that would unlawfully deny eligibility for the refunded portion of several tax credits. If finalized, these rules would take away credits from roughly a million people. taxlawcenter.org/blog/treasu…

SNAP update: Another cut from the Republican reconciliation law takes effect today, cutting the federal match for SNAP administrative costs from 50% to 25%. Every state now gets half as many federal dollars to ensure SNAP gets to eligible families on time & in the right amount.

As I’ve said before, bonus depreciation (expensing) is defensible with the right other rules. The problem is bonus depreciation plus interest expense deductibility, which creates negative effective tax rates. Given bonus, interest deductions are subsidizing data centers.
Microsoft, Amazon, and other tech giants are reaping billions in tax benefits from their massive spending on data centers. Some argue it's just a giveaway to the companies for money they'd be spending anyway. New from me for Bloomberg Tax. @tax news.bloombergtax.com/daily-…

This is perhaps the most important insight from the Everywhere Millionaire. Left-of-center policymakers sometimes counterintuitively hope income/wealth are more concentrated than they actually are so that a tax increase targeted at billionaires raises more money.
There are three million American households with net worth above $5 million derived primarily from ownership of privately held companies, and they collectively account for much more wealth than the Forbes 400. slowboring.com/p/the-truth-a…

This is egregiously wrong--it's trying to pass off a values choice as a mathematical certainty. You absolutely can fix Social Security's shortfall w/ payroll tax increases alone. Whether you *should* is something people w/ different values can debate, but the headline is false.

Replying to @mattyglesias
Also worth adding to the expensing focus of the piece - it seems a good share of these investments are being debt financed and Republicans have paired expensing with full interest deductibility which is an over-the-top design nytimes.com/2026/08/20/busin…

Congressional Republicans claimed these cuts were about "incentivizing a more efficient & effective SNAP program." What's "efficient" or "effective" about making struggling families wait in backlogs without the help they need to afford groceries?
Texas' SNAP application backlog grew from 3,700 in January to more than 150,000 in August as the state implemented major changes in response to the Republican reconciliation law's unprecedented SNAP cuts. keranews.org/health-wellness…

IRS lost 27% of its exam staff from FY 2024-FY 2025 Revenue decreased 25% An obvious fact: If you get rid of auditors, you raise less money from audits. Winners are tax cheats, losers are those who are playing by the rules tigta.gov/sites/default/file…

The deep SNAP cuts enacted last year have harmful ripple effects: Kids losing SNAP also lose automatic enrollment for free meals at school. And as more kids lose SNAP, schools may be forced to drop Community Eligibility & end free meals for all students. stateline.org/2026/09/01/sna…

The Trump Admin is seeking to take away refundable tax credits from roughly a million people.  Make no mistake; this will harm U.S. citizen children and people with lawful immigration status.

Great reporting on families with kids — many of whom are still eligible for SNAP — who have nonetheless lost the help they need to afford groceries. Now, they're facing impossible decisions when buying food means a utility bill goes unpaid or a broken car engine can't get fixed.

The tax code wasn't built for the Age of AI, @business Markets Magazine featured a conversation with @The_Budget_Lab's @marthagimbel. Amid calls to redistribute the vast wealth artificial intelligence could create, Gimbel argues for fixing holes in the current system first. A reminder that two-thirds of tax filers (i.e. married couples making under ~$130,000) are in the 0% capital gains bracket so can't benefit from any capital gains tax cut.

Normally federal budget wonks look at private sector numbers and they seem small. Not this time—this is roughly the size of the ten year costs of Biden’s infrastructure law.

This would bring the top income tax rate for business owners down to 27.7%, almost 10 points below the top rate for employees
The top House taxwriter said he hopes to revisit expanding the section 199A passthrough deduction to as high as 25 percent after last year’s massive tax bill made the provision permanent, but at a lower rate. Read more from @cady_stanton: taxnotes.co/4yEIAO0
