"From roughly the 1980s to ~2025, there has been a “finance game” that one could play, and that “game” looked something like this:
Kill it in high school, pick your choice of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Duke, Georgetown, or “other top-25 school in a given year.”
Spend a couple of years in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, etc.
Immediately start recruiting for private equity roles (because only the losers who can’t get an exit opp stay in banking! The “buyside” is where the real money status is). Because, as we all know, the whole point of going into banking is, really, to get into private equity.
Get promoted to VP in your PE fund (where you start earning some carry), pivot once again to a hedge fund (if you have some real risk appetite), or go to business school, after which you will either rejoin the PE world as a VP or join a hedge fund.
There is a “trade” you make in this career path:
You will work very long hours from your analyst through VP years, but your risk-adjusted cash compensation will be higher than almost any other “normal” job (I exclude hedge funds from this, given that there’s far more earnings volatility. But it’s very true for the banking and private equity game).
You will have a legible, “high-status” career path that plays well with the upper echelons of society.
The longer you stay in the game, the more that your “upside” is tied to your carried interest in your fund. Starting around the VP level, you’ll likely have some points of carry that vests over time. Fund does well, you make a few million down the road. Fund underperforms? Well, you can’t eat carry, can you?
Your downside risk is capped (cash comp is strong), but your upside is also somewhat capped (particularly at bigger funds, you will be allocated a fixed amount of carry, you will have to stay at that fund for a fixed amount of years for that carry to vest, and the performance of that fund is largely outside of your control)
The TLDR: “finance” appeals to a particular person who desires status but abhors risk.
The key to making this trade work was the “downside risk” being capped: funds need a certain number of young folks doing the tedious Excel work that either A) paints the picture the client wants (sellside advisory) or B) hits the IRR the managing director wants (private equity), so they will pay those young folks a lot of money to do these things. The “downside risk” remains capped as long as two things remain true:
Money continues flowing to these firms in the future, ensuring that there will be future fundraises and more dollars to go around to current and future employees.
Younger folks are needed to do the tedious Excel work through which they earn the right to be the “deal guys” over time."

PE was a path to guaranteed money for long enough that people assumed it would always be a path to guaranteed money, making it increasingly prestigious.
But prestige is a indicator of where the world went, not a forecast for where the world is going.

🇮🇱 Far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's Jewish Power party is poised to win eight or more seats running on its own in Tuesday's election, up from the six it won in 2022 on a joint far-right list. Among Israelis aged 18 to 22, it would take nearly 9% of the vote, according to a poll reported by Ynet, the equivalent of about 15 seats.
Up to a third of its supporters will be voting for the first time, a survey at Hebrew University found.
Ben-Gvir has pushed through a law making hanging the default sentence for Palestinians convicted in military courts of deadly attacks on Israelis, starved and tortured Palestinian prisoners, and vowed to "conquer Gaza, because it's all ours."
"I used to think he was a bit crazy, but then I actually looked at what he was saying, and it all made sense," Gavriel Marmon, an 18-year-old first-time voter from Beit Shemesh, told Reuters.

“In late spring 2020, a source I knew to be reliable called me with a story,” writes Matthew Cole. “The Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner’s phone and monitored him as he accessed a Dubai-based bank account. What was odd, the source said, was that the money in the account—hundreds of millions of dollars—had come from a bank in Azerbaijan. Most importantly, Kushner appeared to have transferred significant amounts of money from the Dubai account to other individuals, including a warlord, a mercenary and a one-time hit man. The story sounded preposterous, I told my source. And yet.
Six months later, I found myself speaking with someone else about the UAE government and their use of mercenaries in conflicts around the Middle East and Africa when I asked, on a whim, whether they knew anything about Kushner and bank transfers from a UAE account. My acquaintance grew quiet. Then they replied, ‘Yes.’” Kushner’s lawyer denied the bank account existed.

Two Bank Executives Are Dead. The Predatory Model That Employs Them Is Still Standing
Eva Ngigi Sarwari, managing director of Finserve Africa and Equity Group’s director of payments and international banking, has died aged 45 while on a business trip to China, according to a statement from her colleagues.
Her death cuts short a career that spanned over two decades in banking and payments, from introducing customers to electronic banking at Co-operative Bank of Kenya to leading Visa’s business across three East African markets.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Eva Ngigi Sarwari,” her colleagues said in the statement on Tuesday. They described the news as a “sudden and profound shock” and said they would make further updates as details became available. The statement did not disclose the cause or date of her death.
This comes in the wake of the passing of KCB’s Rosemary Chemutai Kimwatu two months ago through suicide. Our predatory banks, which overwork and underpay their staff, seem determined to extract every last measure of labour from the people they employ for the sake of an extra dollar for their shareholders.
The construct of success as perpetuated by standards glamorized by motivational speakers and authors, which hinged on solipsism for women, a ruthless focus on self and service to money, has re-introduced modern-day slavery, and work-life balance has been suspended for manufactured optics of career elevation.
These banks have optimized their profit lines so thoroughly that all other perks that once came with employment, such as company houses, staff vans, internal catering and club memberships, were terminated under the guise of rationalization and cost-cutting, even while the salaries of their CEOs ballooned a hundred-fold.
Equity is the worst case-study of banking success. It is a bank built on the destruction of the cooperative movement, which exploited Mwai Kibaki’s low interest rates regimes to hawk cheap loans, lure farmers into debt and then cash in after Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime moved to looting through odious debt and the bank’s focus shifted to lending to the government, pursuing ruthless debt recovery mechanisms, turning CEO James Mwangi and Chairman Peter Munga into the largest property and land owners in the country simply from grabbing collateral under the guise of recovering debt.
The constellation is toxic. Think of Thika Greens Golf and Country Club. Mwai Kibaki duped shareholders of Othaya Farmers District Cooperative Union to sell the 2,000-acre Makindi/Mihuti farm under the guise of “debt,” because his son and then Cooperatives Development Assistant Minister Peter Kenneth were shareholders. It was then converted from productive use of growing coffee and earning the country foreign exchange to a real estate project of which James Mwangi is a large owner of the land and properties.
James Mwangi has been the CEO for over 30 years, which is illegal for any publicly-listed company. The bank’s name also appears in the entities claiming Kenya owes them money which they loaned to treasury for fictitious or non-existent projects, money which we shall not repay.
The two deaths sit inside the same arrangement. One woman died on a business trip whose purpose was to keep the payments and international banking machinery running. The other died by suicide after years inside a risk and data-protection role at another major bank, with family accounts citing marital strain and the weight of debts. In both cases the public statement or the autopsy supplies a date and a location. It does not supply a ledger of the hours, the targets, the eliminated staff benefits or the pressure that remains after the condolences have been issued.
The model that treats staff as instruments for shareholder returns, that cut the older forms of support while CEO pay rose, continues to operate. The obituaries do not interrupt it.

Singapore is the Bonnie Blue of Southeast Asia. We are essentially one big money laundering corporation and us sinkies are like the employim happily taking wages for peace and quiet. But there is no peace, we’re choking in smog. Neither is there quiet when we’re crabs in a bucket. Singapore Inc is both the star girl of the KTV as well as the mamasan. A delicate role to balance. Balls must be massaged, lips must be kissed, legs must be spread, all while juggling various suitors. But us Inc workers, we are like the 24/7 chef for the KTV locked in an ever burning kitchen. We are the cleaners picking up condoms and wiping up bodily fluids from VIP rooms. We get our share of the KTV’s profits via wages but do we see the bulk of it? Nope. At least in most brothels the women earn 50%, we take basically of the capital parked in our nation.
If the sg government began to clamp down on those responsible for the haze, it would lead to an unraveling of the entire Ponzi. A whore does not ask her patron where the bag of cash comes from. Or where the beautiful Hermes comes from. You take the cash and chuck it into your safe at home. You take the bag and sell it 2nd hand for cash. You don’t ask questions. Balls, taint, anything really as long as the client is clean enough. As long as the yacht is sailing and the booze and food flow, bosh. Keep on sucking the liquidity out. Head down, keep bobbing. No gagging.
If Singapore questioned any of this, capital will fly away, quickly. Thus, my fellow Singaporeans, understand this. We are basically 2nd tier citizens to capital. We are like the aged whore in the KTV lounge who was not smart enough to become the mamasan and has transitioned into helper. We are the psychological domestic helpers of our rulers. There is so much dirty money pumping through our city that even Bryan Johnson’s Blueprint protocol could not save us if it were a singular human.
We represent the next frontier of Confucianism, I.e. Courtesan Confucianism. We use the best aspects of Confucian conformist society while secretly spreading our loins for capital.
Really, we should have Bonnie Blue as both minister of fertility and finance as she will probably know how to solve both issues at once. I highly recommend the PAP consider bringing in her foreign talent to boost our national prospects.
I’m tired and need coffee. Lanjiao loves you all!
