Stop asking founders, "What's your moat?" Start asking them, "What's your bridge?"

Scrolling X for five minutes: Omg someone is building everything and has raised so much money, market is taken. It's too late.
Talking to any large private or public company CEO: Uh, we don't use AI, working on a strategy, also how do we price agents?
Don't even get me started on consumer.
It is so early. Go build.

Austin Bio & Health is no longer a future-tense story. Austin is already 5th in U.S. startup funding, 2026 is already a record year, and our biggest Bio & Health exit just hit $2B.
🧬Austin Bio & Health Roundup🧬
💭 My Thoughts
I spoke at ULI Austin this week about the state of the Austin Bio & Health ecosystem.
The question now is what comes next. More founders, more operators. more capital, more infrastructure, more connectivity, just more!
🤝 Partnerships & M&A
Function and Google Health partnered to bring Function’s 160+ lab tests into Google Health alongside wearable data from devices like Fitbit and Pixel Watch.
Paradromics and Siemens Healthineers are working together on imaging for BCI patient assessment, surgical planning, implantation and long-term follow-up.
🚀 Launches & Milestones
Phantom Neuro implanted Phantom X in humans for the first time. The under-the-skin sensor translates intended hand and arm movements into wireless commands for prosthetics.
Natera received FDA Breakthrough Device designation for its blood-based multi-cancer early detection assay.
XBiotech’s Phase II TASKIN trial met its prespecified efficacy criterion in refractory metastatic colorectal cancer, with 61.3% 12-month overall survival in the experimental arm versus 55.7% in the control arm.
💰 Funding & Capital
Vironix Health received an undisclosed investment from Cypress Growth Capital. The company uses AI-enabled remote monitoring to help providers manage chronic conditions between visits.
🤠 Texas Bio Triangle
Dallas: Warhound emerged from stealth with $200M in funding at a $1.2B valuation. The Ben Lamm and Palmer Luckey company is engineering working dogs for military, law enforcement and emergency-response use.
Dallas: Colossal unveiled GenoMorph, an AI platform that identified roughly 2,300 candidate regulatory elements tied to dodo beak morphology, alongside new germ-cell, chimera and embryo gene-editing milestones.

"Capitalism created the possibility of the win win win. It used to be a zero sum game where somebody won, somebody else lost.
The biggest mistake people make they still think we're in a zero sum world. They're obsessed with some billionaires because Bernie Sanders thinks that @JeffBezos and @elonmusk somehow stole the money from the people.
They don't understand that it's this prosperity machine that's creating more, not just for those billionaires, but for everything that they're touching. They're creating value for their customers, they're creating value for their employees. Their suppliers are flourishing, their investors are seeing their capital go up. It can be reinvested and compound.
All philanthropy ultimately comes from business. That's where the profits are.
Where does all the taxes come from? It ultimately comes from business as well.
This is the engine that's lifting humanity out. The entrepreneurs are the drivers of that engine. Somebody like Elon Musk, he gets a very, very, very tiny sliver of the value that he creates for the whole world."

One of the expected functions of a PR firm is nominating their clients for awards.
One of the concerning things I’ve noticed with the awards @Slicehc has run over the years is that most nominations come from teammates or former colleagues, not from PR firms.
We posted our 4th annual 50 Under 50 Award last week via @joinribbyn . Same pattern so far. Most nominations are still coming from peers, not agencies.
This year I will be reaching out to the honorees who received multiple nominations from their peers. I will tell them whether their PR firm nominated them or not. Most will find out it was not.
There are a lot of PR firms out there. I only highly respect a few of them. If you are evaluating your current firm or looking to make a switch, reach out and I can share the ones I respect.
PSA for PR firms: There is still time to nominate your clients. You have about two weeks left. We will not extend the deadline. Every year people ask on the last day.
If your clients are cost-conscious and always evaluating whether their agency is actually delivering, this is a low-effort, high-visibility opportunity to look like a hero instead of a zero.
Nominate here: ribbyn.co/r/slice-of-healthc…
(And if you’re an agency that does systematically put clients forward for relevant awards, you’re already ahead of most of the field.)

Be extremely intentional with your friendships — not acquaintances, not business partners, actual friends
Try to pick high-integrity people — the right people
Invest time in those relationships
Cut or downgrade folks who are transactional or who don’t show up for you
Reallocate that time and energy to the right people who do
It's ok to be cutthroat about this, as life is the memories you create with your friends and family.
Invest in making moments.

To publish something on a paywalled site is to make it invisible. If AIs can't find it, then for all practical purposes it doesn't exist.
These two sentences aren't 100% true yet, but they will only get truer.
