So many damn CEOs going on and on about software engineers are gonna lose their jobs to AI... Dude, I WISH AI kills software engineering because that's the day I build companies putting all these CEOs out of their jobs! Bring on the AGI!

Stoicism is fake. I disagree that it'll help you cope with reality. Joy of doing what you love. Anger against betrayal. Happiness of witnessing your child's first step. Sadness of letting go of your grandparents. You feel this because you are alive and you are meant to feel it. Descartes should've started with "I feel, therefore I am". Long before cognition came pain and fear coming into this world. Keep it in check, but don't let go of it.
You must remember that all philosophy is a confession. People become obsessed with stoicism because they are naturally neurotic. That doesn’t mean stoicism can’t help you. If you are neurotic, it will help you a lot. Marcus Aurelius was neurotic. But it does mean you need to update your mental model of “this stoic guru will be stoic” to “this stoic guru will be neurotic.” Thinking the DailyStoic guy must be mentally stable is like thinking someone on anti-depressants must not be depressed.

Just last year, around this time, I was still mucking around with Intellij. Now this seems unthinkable. Being a software engineer in 2027 is gonna be wild.

This post is taken from internal Microsoft Blind board. Even the exceptional performers are offered to take this deal. Layoff is coming for all! It doesn't matter how you perform at work.
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg. Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible. This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

If you are a software engineer who has previously been reluctant to change jobs because you were worried about the difficulty of onboarding in a new environment, you should reconsider because this is a golden age to switch jobs right now. Even if you have an unsupportive team or even an unsupportive manager, they will not be able to stop you from learning about the work and the business. You can always dig into the impenetrable code that is written in a garbage way. AI will parse it for you. Make it look understandable. Draw diagrams and even create personalized lectures and podcast episodes dedicated to helping you learn in the way you need to learn. If you're stuck in a crappy job, the time to switch is now; go ahead, interview, and get a new job.

Of course, it's the pesky social media bringing scrutiny that's the problem.

Let's for a moment recognize that running "npm install" in 2016 was harder than solving unsolvable math problems with GPT-6 Astra.

Sonnet 5.5 is an incredible model. The balance of accuracy, speed, cost is better than anything I've used and I use all kinds of models and harnesses. We often talk up the absolute frontier models but these midtier models are now so good that you probably should use them more.

Do you want your engineers to win? You need two kinds of engineering leaders in your team. One that prioritizes quality, and another that prioritizes delivery. When you have these two in a good relationship but still in a healthy competition with one another, that's how you have a high-throughput engineering team.

Spiders and I have a pact at my house. As long as you stay in the corners of the rooms where I don't have to see you, you get to stay. Once you start intruding in my space, you get squashed.

Some negative and entitled people should be temporarily barred from a civil society. I was at a hospital today for some check up. I had a pleasant chat with the front desk lady and joke around about kids, birthday parties etc. After that a middle aged woman came in all disgruntled for some reason and started off the interaction with a rude attitude. When the front desk lady called out the shitty behavior, the pissed off woman started gaslighting her saying the front desk lady was the one who started it which is not true. If this is your behavior outside in public, you can imagine how utterly shitty of a person she would be in private. Make what you will of this, but she did not have any rings on her hand. Some people are miserable to be around.

The first time you move to PNW, you are at awe by trees, water, and mountains. And you get sick or the weather for next 10 years. Then you realize you find this weather more comfortable than somewhere hot and sunny. Then you are locked in to the place.

Socrates taught Plato who taught Aristotle, and Aristotle taught Alexander the Great and the rest is history.
in my 20s I was really into the nature of consciousness, and I read all the popular books about it (Dennett, Chalmers, etc), until eventually I realized that no one had anything useful to say about it, and then I lost interest
