On his birth anniversary, remember the rationalist who challenged superstition and was brutally assassinated in 2013, by the right-wing Hindu organisation Sanatan Sanstha. Reid Miles designed hundreds of Blue Note covers and never really listened to the jazz. He preferred classical music, took a short description of the vibe from Alfred Lion, and worked from that. The records he was sent usually ended up with friends or in used bins. The look he built is still what a lot of people picture when they hear the word jazz.
