So ChatGPT Ads have gone down the route of account mangers reaching out to advertisers. Can only hope they improve upon Google's setup of effectively sales people with zero knowledge of running campaigns & all advice amounts to "spend more". I'm going to give them a chance.

Not a great sign that advertisers are dipping their toes into ChatGPT Ads then walking away rather than jumping in for more. I'm seeing the same on a smaller scale. Everyone is waiting for results to improve - that actually needs to happen pretty soon to keep brands engaged.

Inject this directly into my veins. I’ve spent 20+ years helping clients learn how to reach their actual referral potential. The people who claim that things like referrals don’t work, because they “asked” and got rejected have always been the ones who refuse to take the time to put in the work. The people who put in the work just rake in the opportunities. They’re in unbelievably high demand, because their supply is so low.
"The worst they can say is no" is missing half of the equation. If all you do is ask, but don't put in any of the work upfront to validate the request, you're not going to get anywhere. Yes, be bold, be audacious, but do the fucking work first.

Interested to see these ChatGPT Ads that click-to-chat. It makes sense to continue the conversation in the format the user is already in. But shifting the conversation more specific to the brands products/services. I think it's a winner, after a learning curve.

Part of so many changes since launching I suppose but it is pretty difficult to know what's working in ChatGPT Ads. It's clear it's miles off converting compared to Google Ads but it's even hard to know why some ads do better than others, especially the targeting settings.

A lot of this growth has to be experimentation. I'm really not sure how many advertisers will be seeing ROAS comparable to other channels yet. Sure some big brands are using it as a mass awareness play. But to get advertisers to stick, the results are going to need to improve.

This trend is continuing, accelerating if anything. Back-to-back-to-back campaigns lined up. It's not just the volume of leads, it's the quality. Significant six-figure deals getting done off 4-6 weeks campaigns spending ~$10-15k.
I've been asked to help set up LinkedIn Ads campaigns for more clients in the past 5 months, than in the previous 5 years combined. And yes they're working. Every one of them is discussing future campaign plans with me too. Interesting.

Credit where it's due, the ad copy generator in Google Ad is all of a sudden way better. Don't get me wrong it's coming from a very low base, still hallucinates, and 100% needs reviewing. But maybe like 40% of the suggestions are pretty decent now with a bit of fine-tuning.

ChatGPT Ads are doing everything in their messaging & updates to be seen as a conversion ads platform. Yet they just don't convert all that well yet. Fix the underlying problem and they won't need the messaging, it'll just be obvious. Will be an epic fumble if they don't.

It's still funny to me how Microsoft Ads just waits for Google to do something, leaves it a few months then adds it. Not a bad strategy really as often takes that long for Google to find its feet for their new features. Will test as Bing still slept on for certain industries.

ChatGPT Ads is by far what I'm getting asked most about these days. Yet it's still by far the worst performers of all ads platforms I run campaigns on. Wish I could recommend it but the numbers just don't stack up. Yet. I still think their time is coming but we'll see...

The greatest trick Google ever pulled. Getting everyone to pay to show for their own brand. I remember the days when this was unthinkable as part of your ad spend.

If ChatGPT can fix this leak the rewards are incredible, especially for their ads business. Clicks convert at up 4-5x higher from ChatGPT there's just nowhere near enough of them.
ChatGPT has an attribution problem. The user speaks to chat about a problem. They go back & forth to find a solution. They then search on Google for said solution & enquire/buy/sign-up.

My monthly consulting income: The dip is when my first child was born. Had my best year beforehand in the run up. Then once things settled I kicked on even further. The motivation is like nothing else.
It seems that my own experience aligns with the data: being a father correlated with me a being a more successful entrepreneur. Buffer had started to decline prior to our first kid being born, and was at it's bottom by the time the second arrived. I can wholeheartedly say that having kids gave me a whole new level of ambition, and also made me have much greater conviction about working through obstacles to turn Buffer around. Raising kids alongside turning Buffer around has simultaneously been the most fulfilling and most challenging chapter of my life. I hit a patch of depression within this phase too which I've recently emerged from.

Ironically ChatGPT Ads reminds me of the old days of testing ad variations manually with single changes. Updates seem to be coming at a decent pace now but they really did launch with something pretty basic. Probably scared a few brands off I'd imagine with current results.

Comparing ChatGPT Ads to Google Ads I'm seeing anywhere between 4x-20x higher conversion rates with Google still. The one client at 4x is happy enough with the cost per lead to continue. The others we're experimenting more before we'll have to re-assess where to put budgets.

And so it begins... The subtle art of getting more clicks from the ChatGPT Ads team. A small description appearing before ads now.
