In January 2017, in @atlblog, I made a bold prediction: "By 2027 the legal industry will produce many billionaires, but few, if any, will be practicing attorneys." Nearly 10 years later, I'm back on Above the Law to see how it aged. Legal tech has now minted 16 unicorns. So … I like my odds. A LOT. Next up: tracking down the legal tech founders I profiled back then. One had a nearly billion-dollar exit, another runs legal for OpenAI, and at least one probably became a sommelier, which is also relevant to us lawyers. Can be hard to internalize if you’re not from a business family: In most cases, you really don’t need permission. Create an offer for a product or service at a price where you think can profit, put it out there, watch carefully how potential customers respond, then course-correct.

My quick takeaways on the Anthropic S-1: 1. This is a historical moment 2. $6.6M in revenue per employee!! Hard to even comprehend how good that is but Anthropic is AI native as it gets so makes sense. 3. I always thought OpenAI would drop their S-1 first 4. Customers spend about 9x more after a year. Net Revenue Retention is approximately 900% as of Sep 30, 2026. Good SaaS companies brag about 120%. 5. Cowork is growing faster than Claude Code did. Goes to show you the demand for consumer products. Duo will probably rip. 6. 3 years ago this company did $41M in revenue. In the first six months of 2026, it did $16.3 billion. I don't think anyone has a mental model for that curve yet, I sure don’t. 7. Nearly half of revenue comes through cloud marketplaces. About 48% comes from customers buying through them. Big companies buy where their budget already lives, and the lesson for founders selling to enterprises is to get listed where your buyers already spend. 8. Their run rate formula is published: the last 28 days of usage times 13, plus subscriptions times 12, which i guess is the new ARR math for founders? 9. It looks like They're merging Cowork into Claude dot au which tells you the chat box era is ending and the "go do the work for me" era is here. 10. Thousands of Anthropic employees are about to become liquid at once, so expect the biggest wave of new AI startups and angel checks San Francisco has ever seen. Reminds me when Facebook went public but this is way bigger. Let’s go! 11. Buried in the filing, Anthropic says the gap between what Claude can do and how widely it's used is one of its biggest growth opportunities, so the company itself is telling you the models are ahead of the market and someone has to close that gap for dentists, landlords, and plumbers. 12. Whatever happens, exciting times to be building in AI.

The only reason Macro works so well is because we're in our own form of RSI loop - The whole team uses it all the time, so we get human QA for free from smart people. The team really likes what we're building and uses it 8+ hours a day, so everyone has good intuitions - When there are bugs in the product we spawn most of our agents from Macro - this is also how we know that agents are working well, and if there's issues we spawn more agents to fix the agents - Customer feedback comes in through support channels directly to founders and we can kick off agents right from those support channels Marketing -> user feedback -> coding agents -> merge, all within Macro

this is the stat I saw last year. it’s been quoted many times many places, don’t remember the original Non-equity partners now comprise 51% of all partners at Am Law 100 firms, up from just 14% in 2005–2009. leanlaw.co/blog/the-path-to-…

100% below. And … every person i know with a brain in c-corps and other for profit business say they are personally FAR more productive. Something doesn’t add up.
I can’t remember the last time we were this bearish on AI as a theme since 2024, when ChatGPT was making Will Smith videos that you could easily tell was not real The fact that you can upload a picture of any question in any subject domain in the world, no matter how sophisticated, and get a pretty good answer from AI is enough to let me know that we are never going back on this technology People don’t fully appreciate how reliant every student and corporate office worker across America is on AI today If you unplugged Claude or ChatGPT from every school or company tomorrow, there would literally be hysteria and people would stop working until it came back online Not to mention, I have many friends who literally use AI every single day in their personal life to design their workout, meal prep plan, vacations and so forth Talk to any girl under the age of 28 getting into a relationship today and they are asking AI how to communicate their feelings, and using it to draft text messages to their Hinge dates People are literally using these tools as their personal trainer, therapist, doctor, tax accountant, and everything in between I know multiple people across finance who have turned down job offers because their new firm doesn’t pay for Claude in Excel or have access to ChatGPT. Younger analysts are literally unable to do their job without these tools already, and it will soon infect seniors as well This technology is not a fad. Demand is going exponential, whether you like it or not. The bears used these tools 6 months ago, got a disappointing or subpar response, and decided that these tools are not useful Reality could not be further from this false narrative

You can now assign a Macro Task to an agent like a human. Here's how it looks: 1. Pick any agent you've added (like Cursor, Claude, Codex, or any custom coding agent) and it starts a session with the task as context. 2. You can see the full agent trace linked in task’s discussion thread as it works. It syncs bidirectionally with your agent. No need to leave Macro to send followup messages. 3. The PR is linked right inline. You can review the diff and merge without leaving Macro, or review on GH.

If Apollo is right, and there has been no payoff for the vast majority companies, I am far more bullish on the economy. I am by no means a high-level expert in the use of AI (i am in its distribution in legal) and it’s acceleration of my work is astounding. It does show up in the numbers and I can feel my mastery of my subject matter (legal technology) increasing every day as I am able to learn and understand more. If, other businesses have not figured out how to benefit from this technology yet, they will. It will be epic.
This Apollo report, claiming AI has returned "zero financial payoff" outside of the Mag 7, is a complete non sequitur. They show that profit margins and revenue per employee is flat outside of the Mag 7, therefore the rest of corporate America is not seeing any returns to AI spend. Who sees the problem with this analysis? Obviously: this is not how you measure the contribution of a variable. You need to measure returns between companies that use MORE AI vs that use LESS AI. A flat aggregate like profit margins across all companies is totally incapable of answering this question. Breaking out Mag 7 vs everyone else is also not the right unit of analysis. Mag 7 are mostly AI sellers, everyone else is mostly an AI buyer. Look at the backdrop. Interest rates are rising, oil is at $116, inflation is rampant, and consumer sentiment is a record low. If the AI buyers are holding onto their profit margins despite that, this is consistent with AI is actually buoying the economy. TL;DR: the conclusion of this article is completely ass-backwards. Very strange writeup. Source: apollo.com/wealth/insights-n…

Have seen headlines like this for decades. Will be interesting to see if they show show up in the numbers. Historically, profits and revenue are up nicely YOY for Biglaw despite the “news.” I know the AT&T team. They are taking this stuff seriously and are smart.
Over the course of this year, AT&T General Counsel David McAtee has stopped paying law firms to do many assignments traditionally done by junior lawyers, instead sending the work to a team of AT&T lawyers using AI. Read @sara_randazzo's latest column reut.rs/4rSGwPr

AI is pretty pretty pretty good.
When my first AI book was published in 2024, the best AI could do 4 minutes of human work with a 50% chance of success When I turned in the draft of Co-Existence earlier this year, it was 17 hours When it was published two days ago, AI could do 17 weeks open.substack.com/pub/oneuse…
