The politics of the Trump convictions are complicated—as shown by how Republicans in close elections are (or aren’t) talking about it. My latest at the newsletter:

So far, all the winners of GOP primaries for open solid-red House seats have been conservative, Trump-supporting white men. But they’re not all the same—I introduce you to the 12 newest (presumptive) members of Congress:

As GOP donors big and small rally ‘round their persecuted leader, Senate candidates can’t get their attention or dollars. My new one at the newsletter (please subscribe!):

Over the weekend, I noted how much I missed @monkeycageblog as the events in Russia were unfolding. So I wrote a summary for this week's @monkeycageblog newsletter 👇

Don't make me tap the @emilyrongzhang article sign.
The effect on (average) voter turnout is not what makes a policy voter suppression. It's whether it increases the cost of voting for a subgroup without a valid election integrity/admin rationale

Some do this out of ignorance. For some others however, it is a business model. We do not know for certain that in the crunch all other Democratic senators would have backed filibuster reform, but simply blurring Biden and Manchin's preferences is misleading and demagogic.

There it is: Brazil’s electoral court rules Jair Bolsonaro cannot be a candidate in an election for next 8 years, saying he abused his office by casting doubts on the voting system during the 2022 elections, which he lost. What now? Short 🧵

In a new paper (with Justin Grimmer), "How Election Rules Affect Who Wins," we offer a solution to a puzzle: despite widespread concern that election laws will tip the partisan balance in elections, scholarly research shows they have small effects.

Seems bad for the legitimacy of actual religions that bad-faith actors can increasingly just make up "religious" reasons for wanting to do bad things so they can get away with it (see also: people discovering their new "religious" objection to vaccines)

Almost forgot @eastbayabhay and I have a paper showing that actual local *policy implementation* of affirmative action didn’t produce political backlash, but the *idea* of affirmative action led to national backlash regardless.
Here's my new working paper w/ @eastbayabhay
Conventional wisdom says affirmative action (AA) policies led to political backlash. But AA policies actually increased Democratic vote shares! Some of this is driven by white flight from AA counties

as expected, the court has inverted the 14th. an amendment written explicitly to directly ameliorate the conditions of race hierarchy becomes in conservative hands an amendment that says it’s illegal to try to directly ameliorate the conditions of race hierarchy
The Supreme Court has ruled on affirmative action. Per Amy Howe of @SCOTUSblog, "The court holds that Harvard and UNC's admissions programs violate the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment."
