A retired NASA engineer who had worked on the Space Shuttle program for 25 years was hired by SpaceX at age 62. He described the first week as the most disorienting experience of his professional life. At NASA, a design change required 3 meetings, 2 committees, a review board, and 6 to 18 months of documentation. At SpaceX, his new supervisor said "if it works, build it. If it doesn't, change it by Friday." He sat at his desk after the first day and called his wife. He told her he felt like a man who had been swimming with ankle weights for 25 years and someone just cut them off. He could move. He could decide. He could build something in the morning and test it in the afternoon. The constraint that he had accepted as the nature of aerospace engineering turned out to be the nature of bureaucracy. Within 6 months he had contributed to more design iterations than he had completed in his last 5 years at NASA. Not because he was working harder. Because the time between having an idea and testing the idea collapsed from months to hours. The same brain. The same knowledge. A different operating system. He described a specific moment where he proposed a modification to a Raptor engine component. At NASA, the proposal would have entered a queue. At SpaceX, the modification was machined by the end of the day and tested by the following morning. He watched his idea become a physical object in 18 hours. At NASA, 18 hours would not have been enough to schedule the first meeting to discuss whether to schedule a meeting. He told an interviewer: "I didn't get smarter when I went to SpaceX. I got faster. The intelligence was always there. The system was in the way." The difference between SpaceX and NASA is not talent. NASA has extraordinary talent. The difference is the time between a thought and a test. SpaceX compresses it. NASA elongates it. The same engineer produces 10x more at SpaceX than at NASA because the bottleneck was never the engineer. It was the meetings about the meetings about the work.

Still weird watching these spray canola on our farm. Great coverage and no wheel tracks for the header to fight. Thanks DADS drones.

UK agriculture manages 69% of the land and still only gets treated like a rounding error in the economy.
446,000 people. Real food. Real weather risk. Real thin margins.
Supermarkets take the margin. Farmers take the drought. Cut legislative overreach and empower our agricultural economy!🇬🇧

More than four years of autonomy. Almost 11,000 hours with SwarmBot Lima. 3,700 hours with SwarmBot Ruby. And a 60-70% lift in performance with AutoFill™* Simon Doolin from Northstar has seen first hand how autonomy can become part of the way an operation works. From being a little unsure about how autonomy would fit into the operation, to seeing it become part of the way they farm. Hear from Simon on why autonomy has been a great decision for their operation. Stay tuned for more from Simon… #SwarmFarm #SwarmBot #AutoFill #AutonomousFarming #AustralianAgriculture *SwarmFarm utilises cutting-edge technology developed with GRDC investment to benefit Australian grain growers.

Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR. We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use. Read more: anthropic.com/news/claude-di…

🇺🇸🇨🇳 NASA's chief says the Moon race between the U.S. and China will be decided in months, not years. “I’m very aware of the fact that there is a second space race. It will come down to months, not years. The Chinese will absolutely put their astronauts on the surface of the moon, do what the Soviets never could, and I think the implications of that will be felt around the world.” More than half a century after Apollo, getting humans back on the Moon has once again become a race between superpowers. And the guy running NASA says this one could be very, very close. Writer: Julie

Why is this government so against AG? Australia has a productivity crisis and we are an extremely productive sector.
You have to be kidding me. People - let your Labor MPs know how you really feel about this latest assault on the last productive sector of our economy.

Kind of concerning when the leaders in AI are scared.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. The golden era of transportation got very literal. Tesla’s gold Cybercab is now carrying paying passengers in Austin, with no steering wheel, no pedals and no human driver sitting there as backup. That’s what makes this two-seater such a big deal. It wasn’t converted into a Robotaxi. It was built from the start for one job: driving people around by itself. Even the gold is doing some work. The color is molded straight into the body panels instead of going through a traditional paint shop. Not painted gold. Born gold. @Tesla / Writer: Annette, Grok Imagine Designer: Janné
