Job interview: "What happens when I go to Google in my browser? Describe the TCP handshake." "I send a SYN, Google responds with a SYN-ACK, then I send an ACK that Google receives, assuming they haven't deprecated their networking stack in the interim."

🧵Next week, you will see people using something called Benford's Law to try to prove election fraud. ⛔️These people are wrong⛔️ I am a scientist who has published on Benford's Law. Let me tell you what it is and why what they are doing is mathematically incorrect. 1/

Italics are important for subtlety and I will fight anyone who says otherwise
“never italicise words to show emphasis! if you’re writing well your reader will know. you don’t need them!” me: oh 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺? listen up buddy, you will have to pry my emotional support italics from my 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘥, 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘥, 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴, they are going 𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦

Dear Fellow White People, Remember that future President Harris needs to walk a line he doesn’t. If she gets mad or a little too loud, she will be seen as “an angry black woman.” We need to appreciate the fucking restraint she has shown. I would have punched him by now.

Resiliency requires something that resembles inefficiency, and we suck at prioritizing future resiliency in the face of unknown crises over present efficiency. A seemingly unlearnable lesson.

What a great life lesson he’s teaching his child. Life is full of contrived disappointments that our parents can profit from via engagement farming.
This kid saved up all week for an ice cream. Spent $5. Dropped it after the 5th lick. I didn’t buy him another one. Life is hard, he took it well.

Here’s the thing folks. I’ve been coding 32 years. When something like this happens it’s an organizational failure. Yes, some human wrote a bad line. Someone can “git blame” and point to a human and it’s awful. But it’s the testing, the Cl/CD, the A/B testing, the metered rollouts, an oh shit button to roll it back, the code coverage, the static analysis tools, the code reviews, the organizational health, and on and on. It’s always one line of code but it’s NEVER one person. Implying inclusion policies caused a bug is simplistic, reductive, and racist. Engineering is a team sport. Inclusion makes for good teams. Good engineering practices makes for good software. Engineering practices failed to find a bug multiple times, regardless of the seniority of the human who checked that code in. Solving the larger system thinking SDLC matters more than the null pointer check. This isn’t a “git gud C++ is hard” issue and it damn well isn’t an DEI one.
