🌱 Why are so many soybeans turning yellow across Southern Illinois? Potassium deficiency may be part of the answer — but it’s not the only possibility. From dry soils and compaction to SCN and disease, multiple stresses could be contributing to this season’s yellowing. 🔎 Before reaching for a solution, make sure you know what’s causing the problem. 🟣 most common maize leaf symptoms. Here is a practical treatment summary for each: 1. Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms: Yellow stripes between veins, especially on older leaves, while veins remain green. Treatment: Apply magnesium-containing fertilizers such as magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) or dolomitic lime. Correct acidic soils by liming. Ensure balanced potassium application, as excess potassium can reduce magnesium uptake. 2. Drought Stress Symptoms: Leaf rolling, drying, browning at leaf edges and tips. Treatment: Irrigate during dry periods. Use mulch to conserve soil moisture. Increase soil organic matter through compost or manure. Practice timely planting to utilize available rainfall. 3. Chemical Burn Symptoms: Scorched, burnt leaf edges or spots after fertilizer or pesticide application. Treatment: Follow recommended pesticide and fertilizer rates. Avoid spraying during hot sunny conditions. Use clean water and proper mixing procedures. Irrigate if fertilizer burn occurs. 4. Phosphorus Deficiency Symptoms: Purplish or reddish leaves, especially in young maize. Treatment: Apply phosphorus fertilizers such as DAP, TSP, or NPK fertilizers. Maintain soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Ensure good root development and avoid waterlogged soils. 5. Foliar Diseases (e.g., Northern Corn Leaf Blight, Gray Leaf Spot) Symptoms: Brown, gray, or tan lesions and spots on leaves. Treatment: Plant disease-resistant varieties. Rotate crops with non-cereal crops. Remove infected crop residues. Apply recommended fungicides when disease pressure is high. Maintain proper plant spacing for airflow. 6. Nitrogen Deficiency Symptoms: Yellowing begins at the tip of older leaves and forms a V-shape along the midrib. Treatment: Top-dress with CAN, Urea, or other nitrogen fertilizers. Apply well-decomposed manure. Split nitrogen applications to reduce losses. Control weeds that compete for nutrients. 7. Potassium Deficiency Symptoms: Yellowing and scorching along leaf margins, starting on older leaves. Treatment: Apply potassium fertilizers such as MOP (Muriate of Potash) or NPK blends containing potassium. Improve soil fertility with organic matter. Maintain proper soil moisture for nutrient uptake. Before applying any fertilizer, conduct a soil test. Many leaf symptoms look similar, and soil analysis helps identify the exact nutrient deficiency, saving costs and improving maize yields. 🌽📈

Dry Soil?If soybean seed has imbibed water for 6 hours (seed is swollen, but the seed coat has not broken),germination is not affected.  If the seed has imbibed water for 12 to 24 hours (seed coat broken, but prior to radicle emergence), then germination is reduced to 60 to 65%.

🌱 Soybean water demand changes as the crop develops. Seasonal water use depends on climate, soil, variety, and growing conditions. Reproductive stages often require careful moisture management. 💧 Drip irrigation helps growers adjust watering to crop needs. #SoybeanFarming
