Xavier Becerra’s team gave us about 10 minutes for our interview.
Instead of asking about campaign promises if elected Governor, I asked him how he’ll handle 9 key issues he’d face in the first year.

This Halloween forecast for Southern California has been rather nightmarish for forecasters as TWO cut-off low pressure systems converge over the region.
However, consensus is beginning to grow.
This will indeed impact the Los Angeles-San Diego region with heavy thunderstorms.

In the 100s of hours of city council meetings I’ve watched since starting our Flock investigations, I’ve noticed a common practice: citizens are required to dox themselves to have their concerns heard. They must publicly share their home address to speak out against surveillance.

New: we got leaked audio of Flock's CEO speaking at a police conference. He said backlash to Flock isn't real (said it's bots and paid protesters; no evidence); his wife told him to never apologize; and he may never do media interviews again. Listen: 404media.co/in-leaked-audio-…
Why is this real life Batman taking on city hall? youtu.be/RiR8swwrV4Q?si=xmE3… via @YouTube
We spent the day with San Jose Batman as he handed out supplies to homeless people.
You've probably see him speaking out at local city council meetings, but here he in his daily work: youtube.com/watch?v=RiR8swwr…

Mayor @DanielLurie 's campaign to amend the city charter -- and expand his own power -- has been about taking on a status quo of corruption and government waste at City Hall.
And yet -- He IS City Hall.

I want to be clear: I would have preferred not to make this video. I am sharing it to explain my upcoming coverage of the race for California state controller, including my efforts to interview incumbent Malia Cohen (D-CA) and why my candidate interview coverage of this office will feature only her challenger, Herb Morgan (R-CA).
I would have preferred to produce a piece giving both candidates equal time. Those are journalistic values that guide me every day. After weeks of outreach and back-and-forth with Cohen’s team, a Zoom interview was scheduled, then abruptly canceled by her team. I was told she had no availability to reschedule before the election.
Her team said I could submit written questions for Cohen to answer in writing. I respectfully declined because I wanted voters to hear directly from her on camera, with the opportunity for follow-up questions.
I told her team multiple times I wanted to ensure voters heard her side, her priorities, and answer why she deserves a second term in office. I made every effort to make that happen.
Fairness is always my priority. My goal was to give both candidates the same opportunity to discuss their records, answer meaningful and tough questions, and speak directly to voters. I regret that I could not make that happen, but voters deserve transparency about the process.

Hope some realize now that their perception of big-J journalists “not doing their jobs” was in fact due to a great example of them doing their jobs - diligence, skepticism, verification - standards the amateurs skip because their only guiding principle is engagement
