‘the abyss of history is deep enough to hold us all’. Paul Valery cited by @DouglasKMurray 👇
Absolutely stunning essay by @DouglasKMurray about the crisis in France. It includes this quote. thefp.com/p/douglas-murray-f…

I think we are about to be supplanted by AI as the hegemonic species on the planet, and quite possibly eliminated. But I like to believe the robots will occasionally look back and say: Jeez, despite everything, they really could DANCE
The transitions between each section are incredibly smooth. It’s so good that I got completely absorbed in this arrangement and almost forgot about the original soundtrack.

So long, America🫡🇺🇸 49 days ago we landed in the USA to follow our country at the World Cup. We had no idea it would turn into the trip of a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who followed along, and to all the people we met who made this journey even more special. We honestly don’t have the words to express how grateful we are for everything you did for us. This trip exceeded every expectation we had. We came here with an open mind, wanting to experience as much of the country as possible. I still remember telling my friends on the flight to Atlanta that I hoped we’d get to meet a few locals on this trip. Now we’re flying home with friends all across the USA. Before we came, we heard so many stereotypes and warnings about America. People told us about safety concerns, that they might check our social media at the border, and all kinds of other things. None of it matched our experience. This was probably the most welcoming country we’ve ever visited. So if you have the chance to travel, do it. The world isn’t nearly as bad as the media often makes it seem. 99% of people are awesome! I heard this quote somewhere during the World Cup, and I think it sums up our experience perfectly: “If you want to hate the world, watch the news. If you want to love it, travel it.” Thank you, America ❤️🇺🇸

Tennessee❤️ When people told us at the beginning of our road trip that people in the South are different, we didn’t really know what they meant. But after spending several weeks here, we finally understand. The hospitality here is just something else. Everyone knows everyone, and it feels like people are living one big shared life. Someone is always stopping by, doors are always open, and everyone is welcome. One guy told us he hasn’t locked his house in 23 years. When we were out on the lake, we met some people who immediately invited us to their lake house to hang out. They offered us drinks, chicken wings, and made us feel completely at home. It’s a kind of hospitality I’ve never experienced before. When we got back to the dock late that night, one of the guys on the boat said something that really stuck with me: “You don’t have to live in some big, exciting city. What matters is the people who live there. That’s what makes you happy. I’ve lived in many places around the world, but nothing comes close to Ocoee, Tennessee. And you know the best part about living here? We’re going to do the exact same thing again tomorrow.” We will be back.

i remember when the joke inside fb was that twitter had fewer monthly active users than meta’s support docs. which makes it pretty funny that zuck now posts here cuz he owns 3b+ users & still has to walk into his competitor’s building to announce a model launch. whether it’s actually him or some pr person it doesn’t really matter. this platform is significant because the most interesting people, the most important people, & the people shaping the next thing still congregate here like it’s a 24/7 sermon.
(1) Today we're releasing Muse Spark 1.1 -- a strong agentic and coding model at a very low price. It's available through our new Meta Model API and in Meta AI.

90% of the soldiers on the first boats to hit the beach didn't live to see the end of the day. Look at those faces. Some of them never made it to 18. Never forget that they paid the ultimate price for our freedom. We live our lives the way we do because of them.

when spacex was getting started, the first and last men to walk on the moon testified before congress against it. gene cernan told congress commercial space companies "do not yet know what they don't know." he said the boeings and lockheed martins were "the folks who have been working on everything we've done for the last 50 years. they know how it can be done." neil armstrong said he was "not confident" the newcomers could achieve their goals. together with jim lovell they warned it would put america on "a long downward slide to mediocrity." spacex now launches more rockets than every country on earth combined. the experts will always tell you it can't be done. build it anyway!

This is a fantastic interview, especially for new SWEs that are nervous about the future.
Did a podcast with @jeanleewrites about my background, including my amusing Uber hiring process. I was doing iOS dev at the time; went for an iOS interview; got put on a backend interview track; cleared it; offer came for a BE eng; joined as Android dev. youtu.be/JOA5x89MjRc?si=zIBY…

this is actually insane > be tech guy in australia > adopt cancer riddled rescue dog, months to live > not_going_to_give_you_up.mp4 > pay $3,000 to sequence her tumor DNA > feed it to ChatGPT and AlphaFold > zero background in biology > identify mutated proteins, match them to drug targets > design a custom mRNA cancer vaccine from scratch > genomics professor is “gobsmacked” that some puppy lover did this on his own > need ethics approval to administer it > red tape takes longer than designing the vaccine > 3 months, finally approved > drive 10 hours to get rosie her first injection > tumor halves > coat gets glossy again > dog is alive and happy > professor: “if we can do this for a dog, why aren’t we rolling this out to humans?” one man with a chatbot, and $3,000 just outperformed the entire pharmaceutical discovery pipeline. we are going to cure so many diseases. I dont think people realize how good things are going to get
