I’m appalled and disgusted. Tonight, the Libertarian candidate called Native Americans “pets,” and the candidate on the Democratic ticket, Alani Bankhead, laughed along. Both should be ashamed. These comments are degrading and dehumanizing, and they have no place in Montana or anywhere else. Native Americans deserve respect and dignity, and I will ALWAYS stand with them.

During the 2024 campaign, when I ran, a friend of mine described feeling like he was asked to be a marionette for the Tester campaign, dance/entertain for a couple months each election season before he and his tribe were discarded until the next election season.

He was far from the only native person to share that sentiment during the election. Bodnar's attack, against a woman who has put in thousands of hours assisting on MMIW cases and is herself indigenous, feels like another inappropriate appropriation for the election.
