🚨🌍 A DECADE AGO I WARNED ABOUT THE COMING CRISIS OF HOPE IN THE WEST. TODAY, IT IS UNFOLDING BEFORE OUR EYES.
In 2016, I wrote an article entitled "They Don’t Believe in the Future." I argued that when young people lose confidence in their prospects, when education no longer guarantees opportunity, and when economic progress fails to translate into social mobility, frustration becomes a powerful force for political and social disruption.
In this compelling @ForeignPolicy op-ed, former Estonian President @KerstiKaljulaid describes a growing crisis of hope across Western societies. Young Europeans are taking to the streets, questioning an economic model that increasingly denies them affordable housing, decent wages, security and the prospect of living better than their parents.
⚠️ The real crisis is not simply unemployment, inequality or the rising cost of living. It is the collapse of expectations. When an entire generation begins to believe that tomorrow will be worse than today, the consequences extend far beyond economics. The social contract itself comes under strain.
🌍 This is not exclusively an African, European or Western phenomenon. It is a structural challenge confronting societies worldwide. The geography may differ, but the underlying question is remarkably similar: What happens when young people stop believing that the future belongs to them?
The most dangerous development is not that young people are protesting. It is that too many have lost faith in the institutions and economic arrangements supposed to offer them a future.
💡 My 2016 article approached this challenge through demographics, economic stagnation, debt and the failure of advanced economies to confront their structural problems. Today's developments reinforce that argument: a society that sacrifices its future to preserve an unsustainable present eventually pays a much higher price.

Sorprendidos —y, sobre todo, muy agradecidos— de que casi 800.000 personas hayáis prestado atención a este juego de analogías nacido de dos cabezas que no entienden absolutamente nada de fútbol: la de @celia_guilarte y la mía.
Os las dejamos todas aquí ⚽️✨ – at Madrid, Spain
Congratulations and thank you, @balahassanu! Your participation was amazing and highly appreciated by everyone. Understanding the particular dynamics of disinformation in local languages was crucial, as was recognising the need to focus on prevention through media literacy.
Workshop done and dusted! On to the next project...

¡Maravilloso!

Today my first book, THE YAHOO BOYS: Love, Deception and the Real Lives of Nigeria’s Romance Scammers (FSG), is finally out in the US.
The book follows four love scammers in Lagos as they scam lonely Westerners while dealing with the worst economic crisis in Nigeria in a generation.
It started with my mum falling for an American soldier who was, in fact, a Nigerian scammer. But it grew into something much bigger.
I’ve spent the last four years of my life working on this: travelling to and living in Lagos, reporting, taking notes, reading, writing and rewriting. I did more than 250 interviews and spent countless hours with the main characters of this book. I poured tens of thousands of euros into the project, to the point where I was dead broke by the end.
I’ve seen the best and the worst of human beings. I’ve laughed and cried and eaten so much jollof and egusi. I’ve had a gun pointed at me in Kentucky. I’ve read conversations with too many people talking about taking their own lives because they were lonely. I’ve met Nigerian families who split an egg four ways for dinner. Many interviewees broke into tears in front of me.
I’ve learnt that being a human being is a difficult business.
I hope you buy and read the book, so you can experience some of this for yourself.
