Anyone who fills Putin’s war chest must expect consequences. Act now, before the ships dock.
I’m sending a sledgehammer message to shipping companies whose tankers are transporting illegal Russian diesel to our ports. Reverse course while there’s still time.

Whilst Reform are talking about Sharia Law again let’s look back when Nigel Farage claimed that there are ‘ghettos in the UK that are under Sharia Law.’ When questioned about it he lied saying he was talking about France & was unable to provide any evidence to back up his claim.

Ryan Bridge of Raise the Colours rocks up at Wetherspoons demanding entry while sporting a fake enamel poppy badge, specially manufactured in China for flag shaggers. Not a penny goes to the Royal British Legion, but at least the performative patriotism looks the part.

Bridge is such a patriot he wears a £6.99 poppy pin made in China by a Chinese company, where not a penny goes to veterans!!!

its actually quite refreshing to have a PM whose embarrassing history involves raising money for charity, rather than burning £50 notes in front of homeless people and shagging pigs...

There’s something brilliantly witty in this passage, delivered by a superb punctuation. Two things strike me: writing with wit and reading accordingly have less of a home in modern university; despite 20 years of wars you’d struggle to find academics with similar backgrounds.
An oldie but a goodie. In 1968 a bunch of entitled hippy bastards sent a letter detailing their specious demands to the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford. This was their letter of reply, which speaks to how far the academy has since fallen.

Simon Heffer’s review of Liz Truss’s new book Bank Job in the Telegraph. ‘Of all the books I have ever reviewed that purported to offer a serious thesis, this is without question the most deranged. If you are seeking a Christmas present for someone you really don’t like, give them a copy.’ 🎄🎅🎄🎁

The ‘have three, only have one is available for ops’ is a well-known thing, which has been recklessly discounted by the British 'to do more with less' for many years. Originally 16 x Type 23s. Three sold to Chile 2005, left 13. Therefore four approx avail for global ops (though more could be deployed in time of crisis/war). But in recent years there have only been eight anti-submarine specialist (ASW) Type 23s, as rest general-purpose vessels. And so, even then only three max T23s (at any one time) could actually fully handle the vitally important ASW roles (protecting the deterrent working in northern seas and monitoring Russian submarine routes more generally). The UK also failed to replace 6 x Type 22 (Batch 2) ASW ships that were axed late 1990s/early 2000s, then binned 4 x T22 (Batch 3, ASW/general-purpose) without replacement in 2011. The T23s were meant only to replace Leander Class and Type 21 frigates btw. The abandonment of common sense 3:1 rule and so having a fleet with, say, 10 frigates available for global ops at any one time, coincided with the notorious 17-year 'frigate building holiday'. Fewer ships left in service were pushed harder and wore out even quicker. We are now fast approaching a nadir in British naval history (esp with no SSNs on ops) - even a shocking a low in modern global naval history for a so-called leading maritime power. But it should surprise nobody, especially in government or the higher reaches of the military (recent past and present) . And certainly not a surprise for readers of @WarshipsIFR magazine via our repeated warnings of where things were going, since the first edition in 1998, plus the numerous warnings of other naval specialists on here and elsewhere.

“Then there is the case of Norfolk, Virginia, where a British general recently took command of Nato’s Atlantic headquarters in September. To date, Britain has filled 44 of its 71 posts there. The ministry’s tepid response to this is that its fill rate across Nato is among the highest in the alliance. I wondered whether there has ever been a more meaningless metric. Back in the real world, if we cannot staff the commands we ask for, at what point do we stop being given them?” “So how do we unpick this long-standing mess? First, consequences. Nobody in Main Building or the front-line commands has ever lost a job for presiding over this ritual, and the single services are not innocent: each protects its own headquarters and sacrifices its own capability. A few sackings would concentrate minds, “pour encourager les autres”, as Voltaire had it, even if the execution he alluded to might be a little extreme.” “A friend of mine summed it up succinctly: “The pushers of this ‘jam tomorrow if we can just take a bit of famine today’ theology are now amongst the highest ranks. A theology which is clung to despite several iterations of proven failure.” Grim, but unarguable.” “So long as it remains in the Treasury’s interest to run defence year by year and the decision makers that could force this to improve either fear anything that challenges the status quo…[or defence itself], then nothing will change.” “Next autumn there will be another round of cancelled exercises and another speech about a war footing. This cycle of cuts and waffle is about the only thing in British defence right now that is reliable.”
