Just published a piece in HBR on the Carbon Short that all companies are facing, along with @rgeccles (founding chairman of SASB). "The bill on your GHG emissions is coming. Are you ready to pay it?" (1/10) hbr.org/2021/10/carbon-might…
#energytwitter who are the people most experienced in VPPs? If a company already has real aggregated demand across a number of markets, who can help prioritize the markets/utilities, operationalize, structure contracts, etc? @JigarShahDC @duncancampbell @JulianSpector @Energy4Chris
Many I’ve talked to in last 2 weeks believe developed economies will cut carbon *eventually* from transportation, power generation & likely the built environment. But what of ag, Scope 3, cross border flows & most importantly financing the same transitions in the developed world?

I'm having a generative ai meets climate startup event at my home in Boston. Who are the who's who on this topic that should be there?
Can anyone tell me another domain in the world where people buy something on the basis of counterfactual claims (other than maybe protection rackets or bribery)? wsj.com/articles/renewables-…
Things can be both necessary and insufficient. As with the inflation reduction act’s climate provisions. Celebrate, recognize where not enough, work just as hard to close gaps. Momentum builds.

Further away from scarcity of carbon today. The ball is clearly in Congress’ court (pun barely intended), and it will take an extraordinary turn in congressional willingness to make far-reaching emissions policy for us to reach 2030 goals.
Replying to @mlavelles
For example, Roberts' opinion says quite clearly that EPA can't put into place a cap-and-trade program to address climate change under this section of the law. But EPA conceivably could require another "best system of emissions reduction" that reduces GHG....

Old argument against solar:
-Too expensive
-Too unscalable
-Too intermittent
New argument:
-It’s so affordable & scalable, alongside storage, that if we don’t set a hard cap, our model selects much more than we want
Bans are when the cost of emissions in a sector using a particular tech goes from zero to infinity in an instant, making investors wish they had used an escalating proxy cost. Woulda coulda shoulda. Not sure how to say that in Dutch.

Reminder:
If decarbonization of a sector is going to scale, it MUST be more profitable than business as usual.
What are you working on in your sector to deliver this?

We'd love to interview @jbstraubel of @RedwoodMat for What's Your Problem?
But we're having a hard time getting in touch.
Twitter hive mind, can you help us reach someone at the company?
Utterly and completely and thoroughly true. Companies cannot solve Scope 3 on their own. Governments are on the hook.

And before too long, sustainability will become a CFO/finance function across a broad swath of Fortune 500 companies. Speeding that transition would be an enormous achievement / milestone to work towards. Decarbonization is simply risk management. carbonware.substack.com/p/th…

In fact, after 26 COPs, there is no clear evidence from this curve that humans have yet noticed a climate emergency. Why? Rebounds are undoing national and business and personal actions. And renewables and efficiency gains don’t help without a constraint on the fossil fuel.
