I’m tired of the mental health misinformation and pseudoscience that pervades healthcare, pop culture, social media, and the wellness industry.
So I wrote a book about it.
And it’s now available to pre-order. 😊✌️

Hero
Most people know Dr. Peter Hotez from his television appearances during COVID, his defense of vaccination, and the relentless attacks directed at him on social media.
I know Peter as a friend. And I want to tell you about another part of his life that rarely enters those arguments.
For more than four decades, Peter has devoted much of his scientific career to diseases that afflict some of the poorest people on Earth. Diseases that cause enormous suffering but attract relatively little commercial investment because the people who need treatment often cannot afford to pay for it.
Hookworm. Schistosomiasis. Chagas disease. Leishmaniasis.
These are hardly household names. Their victims rarely make headlines, and the scientists working on them seldom become celebrities.
Peter chose this field long before COVID, long before the cable news appearances, and long before strangers began calling him a pharmaceutical industry shill.
His career deserves a closer look.
Because the work tells a story that is almost entirely absent from the accusations made against him.

"Logical Fallacies Used To Promote Alternative Medicine" is a Latin phrase that goes like this:
"Post hoc ergo propter hoc":
"Occurs when we believe that because an event occurred first, it must have caused a later event."

The misuse of anecdotal evidence is the heart of pseudoscience and the currency of alternative medicine.

She’s a recent Bent Spoon Award winner.
The Bent Spoon Award is presented annually in Australia to "the perpetrator of the most preposterous piece of paranormal or pseudoscientific piffle."
Newest winner: Barbara O’Neill for promoting alternative medicine pseudoscience for serious health conditions and lying about qualifications.

In a study of 1 901 815 cancer patients, those who chose alternative medicine had a 2-fold greater risk of death compared with patients who had no alternative medicine use.
And it’s probably because they refused conventional care: jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

Alt health conspiracy theorists: Alt health has many cures for cancer. Also alt health conspiracy theorists: Big pharma has a cure for cancer but is keeping it from us.

What is the cure? Why are you also keeping it a secret?

And OF COURSE MAHA is going to go with the ridiculously science-light "metabolic psychiatry" offering. Bedfellows. American science is in shambles.

There’s a vaccine for that.

Before vaccines, I had more than 70 elderly women on ventilators at one time. Every major ICU was seeing the same thing.
So spare me the population-wide “98–99% survived” slogan as though an 85-year-old grandmother had the risk of a 25-year-old.
COVID mortality rose brutally with age. We watched it happen in front of us, bed after bed.
Then vaccines arrived, severe disease fell, and those wards changed.
You have a percentage.
We had the patients.

In cancer care, use of alternative medicine is associated with increased death.
In this study, greater conspiracy mentality and lower science literacy skills are linked to believing that cures for cancer are being suppressed: semanticscholar.org/paper/Th…

And further, he who holds the poison also holds the cure
The cure for cancer has been known for decades, but of course we can’t let that cat out of the bag and lose our billions in “cancer” research now can we?
Absolutely pathetic

As I keep saying, alternative medicine is one of the greatest scams in history.
Not all of it. But much of it.
