I'm still old school pencil and ink on paper. There's something drawing on paper that feels better than digitally (I work on the computer all day at work).

What the hell must I do? Artists just want a place online where platforms don't feed their work to AI. So I built Cara. But people just won't leave us alone. The laws don't help us, the governments don't help us. What are artists supposed to do exactly? 1/

A not-so subtle cross promotion of GoG, which is owned by CD PROJEKT RED.
The Witcher 3 has a quest about a mage who buys a tower pre-owned and gets locked out of it by DRM (Defense Regulatory Magicon). Geralt must help the mage find GOG (Gottfried's Omni-opening Grimoire) to remove the DRM and allow him access to his new tower. Insanely relevant.

This post was about the insider news I got this morning that a majority of Id's studio is being laid off, including most (if not all) coders.

I’m so sorry for everyone at id Software affected by these layoffs. I know what it feels like to leave id while id goes on. It’s a strange and painful thing to step away from a place that holds so much of your work, friendships and history. The people at id have done a great job moving that legacy forward. DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein are not easy names to carry on, especially in today’s industry. The last few games showed real care, skill and respect for what those worlds mean to people. A note on digital preservation: id's history is critically important to the history of games. I’ve preserved id’s complete early history from our start at Softdisk through to August 6, 1996, including materials and assets that, as far as I know, id itself no longer has. I hope someone is doing the same for the company’s ongoing legacy (the work, code, assets, stories and the people behind them). I’m thinking of everyone at id today, and everyone else affected by yesterday’s layoffs. Romero Games was there a year ago. I know how devastating it is, and my heart's with all of you.

Even if a game vanishes from the GOG storefront, it never leaves your library. Exactly as digital ownership ought to be.

Tracey, You know I’m a serving police officer. My heart is heavy over everything that has transpired over the past few weeks. I’m owed no respect, trust or compassion by anyone. I choose to wear the badge and can chose to hand it in at anytime. But I also find it rather suspect at best as to the actual compassion for the police by the anti-gun crowd. When Cst. Bali was run down with a car. Crickets. When Cst. Pinizzotto was felled with an illegal handgun. Nothing. When my friend Cst. Bona was shot at with a person with multiple firearms prohibitions. Silence. When two RCMP officers were shot by a person in possession of an illegal firearm. No tweets. Yet when a clearly deranged individual shot and killed Cst. Benredouane, and it fit their agenda, well now, conveniently they have something to say. Each and every one these officers that lost their lives had value. Yet only when one was killed with the tools they wish to see banned, do they feel the need to say something. So investigate the shooter. If there was a failure of the licencing system, address it. Look at his family, his mental health, social groups, all of it. We owe that to every officer, and every Canadian. But as these past few weeks has shown, if you only focus on the TOOL used in these evil acts, the PERSON using the tool, will just find a a new tool. And we’ll be here again, whenever the next incident happens, saying the same things. And with that said, I don’t appreciate being used as a tool for anyone’s agenda, and I don’t want to see a dead officer used as one either. Cst. Benredouane’s life was so much more than that.

Phishing and social engineering are getting more sophisticated at an exponential rate due to AI. Proton just let a phishing email go through to my inbox that I think will compromise tens of thousands of folks. How it seems to work: someone added my email to a real Google Group. They then sent out a message to all members of the group with subject line "Your Google data has been exported." Obviously this will cause many people to panic. The email went through to my inbox because it came from a legit google group from a legit Google URL. All links in the email look totally normal – unless you look at the link for "Cancel request" button. But amazingly this one also seems to come from a genuine Google URL – a URL shortener from Google! goo[dot]gl/XXXXX (not putting the real URL here). Then it takes you to (1) a Recaptcha screen and then (2) a genuine looking Google account login screen. It's hosted on a Google site (sites[dot]google[dot]com) so everything looks legit. Because all links are technically hosted by Google, this is very very bad.

The creator of ChatGPT is named "Altman," as in "alternative to human" and he leads OpenAI, which is completely closed. His main opponent is the company Anthropic, meaning "human-centered" is led by "Amodei," as in "loves gods". Then there's "Gemini," meaning "two-faced," from a company that said that it will do no evil. Brilliant work as always Kojima!
