Partly this is due to the extreme secrecy around the hacks. Only now, months after @WSJ broke the story, are officials starting to share details about the ongoing investigation. The spy balloon was literally visible, easy to understand and 24/7 cable news catnip.
The cyberespionage operation by China known as Salt Typhoon is much more significant than the spy balloon of early 2023. It's not even close. US officials familiar with the intelligence are stunned. Yet the spy balloon gripped millions of Americans for weeks, and this hasn't.
