Delivering Timely Justice Through Plea Bargaining in Arua! A total of 151 cases were concluded during a Plea bargain camp at Arua Main Prison, with 84 convicts sentenced to community service and 67 receiving custodial sentences, including a maximum sentence of 20 years for aggravated defilement. This is after our Arua clinic officers actively participated in four mobile court sessions organized by @JudiciaryUG presided over by Resident Judge Her Ladyship Harriet Grace Magara, Chief Magistrate H/W Conrad Oroya Obol, and Magistrates H/W Hellen Amweno, H/W William Mwonge, and H/W Christine Imalingat on 13th & 14th October, 2026. The initiative facilitated the speedy resolution of cases, reduced case backlogs across and contributed to prison decongestion through community service sentences, reinforcing access to justice. #AccessToJustice @TheLegalReports @nilepostnews

UGANET in the Field | Obongi District Access to justice begins with awareness, information and the opportunity to understand one’s legal options. Ahead of the four-day mobile court session scheduled for October 26-29 in Palorinya Refugee Settlement, Obongi District, UGANET and the Uganda Law Society (ULS) conducted a sensitisation session at Moyo Government Prison. The session informed inmates about the purpose of the mobile court, plea bargaining and reconciliation. Those interested in plea bargaining also held individual consultations with defence counsel to explore possible sentences. To extend awareness beyond the prison, the team joined a radio talk show on Radio Aulogo, featuring representatives from UGANET, ULS, the District Police Commander and Probation and Social Welfare. The discussion addressed questions from refugees and host community members about the upcoming mobile court and the criminal and juvenile justice systems. These preparatory activities aim to ensure that people understand the process, their legal options and the opportunities available to them as the mobile court approaches. #UGANET4SocialJustice

Promoting Access to Justice at Moyo Government Prison! Inmates at Moyo Government Prison have been sensitized on plea bargaining ahead of the forthcoming mobile court session scheduled for 26–30 October 2026 in Obongi District. The sensitization was conducted yesterday, 19 October 2026, by our Moyo clinic officers in partnership with @Uganetlaw, @UNHCRuganda’s implementing partner. This initiative comes amid prison congestion, with approximately 240 inmates held in a facility designed to accommodate just 100. The session aimed to prepare and equip inmates with an understanding of the plea bargaining process and its benefits, enabling eligible inmates to make informed decisions while promoting the expeditious resolution of cases, potential sentence reductions, reduced time on remand, and the decongestion of prisons. @nilepostnews @TheLegalReports
