🚨🇵🇾 A bank with 3 MILLION customers just collapsed in Paraguay, and it took the country's PRESIDENT down with it.
That's nearly HALF the population of 6.5 million.
Ueno Bank was supposed to be Paraguay's fintech success story. Instead, regulators discovered serious solvency problems and questionable lending to companies linked to its controlling shareholder.
And then things got political.
The bank was managing around $850 MILLION in public funds, while President Santiago Peña had previously held a stake in its parent business group.
Even Paraguay's central bank chief had previously RUN the bank. He resigned on Tuesday.
Now Peña has resigned too, with prosecutors investigating his possible involvement. He denies wrongdoing.
Meanwhile, ordinary Paraguayans are still struggling to access their savings, including pensioners who depend on payments through Ueno.
Imagine waking up to find your bank frozen, the central bank chief gone, and your president resigning.
All in the same week.

🇵🇾 Paraguay's president has RESIGNED after a spectacular banking collapse left millions of people unable to access their own money.
And the whole thing unraveled in just THREE DAYS.
Regulators seized Ueno Bank, a digital lender with roughly 3 MILLION customers, after uncovering serious financial irregularities.
Then came the protests.
People lined up outside bank branches, desperate to withdraw their savings, while lawmakers moved to IMPEACH President Santiago Peña over his past financial ties to the lender.
Even powerful figures in his own Colorado Party withdrew their support.
Now Peña is gone.
And there's an interesting geopolitical twist: he was a close Trump ally, making his resignation another headache for Washington in Latin America.
But for ordinary Paraguayans, the immediate problem is much simpler.
Their president has resigned. Their money is still tied up in a banking crisis.
And that's not something a change of government fixes overnight.

On concentre.
On place les pensions.
Et un matin, ça ne répond plus.

Ueno Bank’s collapse shows why bank supervision matters
Paraguay’s largest digital bank was placed into resolution after its capital ratio fell to 5.56% (vs 12% minimum). Nearly 3 million people — roughly 60% of the adult population — had accounts frozen, with $800–850m in public and pension money trapped (including ~$350–380m from the IPS pension fund).
Ueno grew fast from fintech to full bank (licence late 2023) and held ~$2.8bn in deposits. Supervisors cited excessive related-party lending to companies linked to controlling shareholders (Grupo Vázquez), weak credit assessment and major accounting adjustments. Supervisors warned it in June 2026. Deposit insurance covers up to ~$38k per person and protects ~97% of depositors, but authorities froze accounts immediately.
When one bank holds deposits for most adults and a large share of public pension money, failure has immediate political and economic consequences. Someone inside the bank and at the supervisor has to act when standards slip. That is why regulators are cautious about full banking licences.
Revolut has shown no interest in Paraguay and does not offer accounts there. It is expanding across Latin America. Whether this makes the market less attractive to new digital banks, or whether a well-known global name with stronger supervision would be better received, is an open question. Public trust in digital banking has taken a hit.
For depositors, the priority is that the guarantee works. For regulators, the lesson is clear: rapid growth is not a substitute for capital, credit standards and the willingness to intervene early.
