I hate to be that person, but no, Pre-Historic Woman was not feminine. She smelled bad. Blood dribbled freely down her thighs once a month. There are no tampons in the jungle, and no one wears high heels in the state of nature. The female is not feminine. Life is a brutal and bloody struggle. We didn’t survive 10,000 years by flowering our wrists with jasmine. Germaine Greer was right to point out that childbirth itself is the anti-thesis of femininity: squatting naked and pooping yourself while crying is not a feminine act, and yet it is the most female thing we can do.
