Federal prosecutors say 18-year-old Twin Cities resident Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud planned an attack at the Mall of America. He is now in federal custody. The criminal complaint says the FBI had been investigating Sheikhdoon since 2024. Prosecutors allege he communicated with an FBI informant, later bought a firearm from an undercover FBI employee and had previously talked about traveling to Somalia to fight for al-Shabaab. Federal officials said Sheikhdoon is the only person charged in the case. The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
