Shocking news out of Cork University Hospital: a brand-new €99m surgical hub was officially opened by Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and Tánaiste Micheál Martin, only to be closed almost immediately due to failed air contamination tests.
The high-profile opening went ahead despite senior doctors having already raised serious patient safety concerns over ventilation issues and unfiltered air ducting. While critics slammed the ribbon-cutting as a political PR stunt, the Minister insisted the event was "already in the diary" and that she was unaware of any air quality issues at the time.
The hub was forced to shut its doors for two full weeks while deep cleaning and emergency operational checks were carried out, finally reopening after tests were cleared. While the HSE claims clinical leaders are now satisfied, the facility is still far from running at full capacity—treating ONLY a handful of patients due to severe ongoing staffing shortages.

Yesterday, I received a security notification from Apple warning me that my iPhone had been targeted by a sophisticated mercenary spyware attack, involving technology of the kind developed by companies such as NSO Group, the Israeli firm behind the notorious Pegasus spyware.
Perhaps the most alarming aspect of Apple’s warning was its confirmation that such attacks target specific individuals “because of who you are or what you do.”
This is not the first time I have been targeted by spyware. I was previously targeted with Pegasus in both 2017 and 2021.
I do not yet know who is behind this latest attack, or whether it is connected to my investigative documentary, The Trap, which I directed and co-produced. The film, available on Al Jazeera 360, exposed the details of the September 2024 pager explosions in Lebanon.
What is certain, however, is that the targeting of journalists with sophisticated spyware poses a grave threat to press freedom, the confidentiality of journalistic sources, and the very foundations of independent investigative journalism.

Police counted 30,000 in Milan, where marchers shut down the eastern ring road for three hours, while organizers claimed over 100,000, according to Italian broadcaster TGCom24. The justice system cannot be so consumed with the welfare of offenders that it loses sight of the victims.
