exactly this, a bunch of non essentials are buried inside the budgets of the core services
tucked away

Force them to unbundle their budget items. Often very necessary items are bundled with a bunch of wish items.

Council hid it from me. Admin had already started prepping the documents in anticipation of the NOM. I guess they mistook the Mayor for what he keeps referring to as being more "transparent".

From today. Whatever you think you’re doing it isn’t working.

Good point - 4 years is too long.

Council needs to go to two year election cycles. 4 years is far far too long for these clowns to go unsupervised.

Stop giving away city property to build First Nations housing.
This is the federal government responsible and we already supported them through our federal taxes every year.
Focus on Calgary maintenance of infrastructure. The new “indigenous economy” funded by taxpayers already

Core services, first.
Before Council funds anything optional, we should fund the services Calgary can’t function without: safe drinking water, police and fire protection, roads and transit.
At my Ward 11 budget town hall last week, the residents who joined me liked having a clear test for what counts as core. I ask three questions: Is it the City’s job under Alberta law? Would losing it put people at risk or seriously disrupt daily life? Does it provide a public system that households can’t reasonably provide for themselves?
Water passes all three. I want Calgary’s urgent water repairs funded now and the work to replace aging pipes to keep moving. I voted against the four-year water rate increases because I believe Council can do more to keep bills affordable. I’m prepared to cut optional spending elsewhere in the budget to ease the pressure on households.
When I vote on this budget, I’ll start by asking whether we’ve funded the services Calgarians depend on. Only then should we decide what else we can afford.
Core services, first.

You don’t get to download blame onto Calgarians for City Hall’s failures. Rates were not frozen for a decade. The review found repeatedly deferred inspections despite known risks, while City Hall kept taking utility dividends that constrained reserves. Where’s the accountability?

@djkelly City Hall projects $870M in utility transfers to itself for 2027–2030 while bills rise 73.6%.
Water Services had 1237 budgeted FTEs for 2026 with another 343 positions requested.
Why should Calgarians sacrifice their homes while City Hall expands?

This is terrifying because it isn’t even close to a binary choice. The pipes won’t explode if we don’t overtax Calgarians.
Socialists always fall back on the same answer: give government more money and everything will be fine. My colleague doesn’t mention priority spending or core services once. Higher rates are presented as the only solution.
This is what we’re facing heading into budget, and why my fellow councillors and I came forward with a promise to do the actual work and cut non-core spending and fix the pipes.

Problem wasn’t the frozen water bills ..it was using prioritizing spending budgets to acquire meaningless silly artwork and frivolous bullshit like that instead of reinvesting in the city’s Infrastructure liabilities.
More taxes are seldom the problem…reckless spending priorities are…🤷♂️😡🤦♂️

Cut your climate department and all climate related initiatives, then cut DEI initiatives and then come back to us about raising taxes.

Calgary has a major sewer problem, and we need to get this crap fixed. After ten years of frozen water bills, we've got $1.6 billion in aging sewer infrastructure in poor or very poor condition. We need to fix this now -- or pay a much bigger price when it breaks.

Is it just me, or is our decline accelerating? Governments, whether municipal, provincial or federal are blatantly ignoring the voters, and no one seems to care.

Thank you to the Ward 11 residents and Calgarians from across the city who joined my budget town hall for a robust discussion about Calgary’s priorities.
There was overwhelming support for focusing on core services, along with serious concerns about tax increases and the pressure on household budgets.
Calgarians work hard for their money. It’s our responsibility on Council to ensure we’re spending it wisely, putting needs before wants and delivering the services residents rely on.
I’ll be bringing that message to budget deliberations. Thank you for making your voices heard.
