53 orangutans have now been rescued from forests devastated by fires in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and the scale of destruction is horrifying.
More than 48,500 hectares have burned this year. Orangutans are being found starving, injured and desperately searching for food in forests that have been destroyed.
These are critically endangered animals losing the very habitat they depend on to survive. How much wildlife must suffer before protecting forests becomes a priority rather than an afterthought?

I'm not denying that there are other factors at play in the decline of hedgehogs; nor that good things are happening on a growing number of farms (mostly because of the replacement of the appalling CAP with a new Environmental Land Management Scheme that requires good stewardship of the land).
But are you and I looking at the same country? Have you ever seen the countrysides of France, Spain, or Italy by comparison?
There's a reason why not just hedgehogs, but nearly all wildlife and bird species here, and especially farmland ones, have collapsed across Britain- it's because there is simply no provision made for them in our landscapes whatsoever. Scrub, wet areas, rough grassland, standing dead trees, these are all meticulously expunged from our farmed landscapes... Not to mention the deliberate and terrifying obliteration of insect populations with pesticides.
I spend my time in the southwest, where the overwhelming majority of the grassland is comprised of one or two species of highly commercial grass, dosed to high heaven with chemical fertilisers, not a flower in sight, and cut for silage in May before anything nesting within it has had a chance to raise a brood; all carved up with neat and boxy hedges without blossom in spring or berries in autumn.
What are the wild creatures meant to eat? Where can they find water or shelter in this giant manicured golf course of ours? You're living on a different planet. Thank goodness the public is waking up to all of this (silver lining of social media?)
Replying to @Jes_Squirrell
So @BenGoldsmith et al why not go after the real issues to why hedgehogs are declining before it’s too late to do anything about it! Or does this not fit your narrative of bashing farmers wherever and whenever you can? 🤔 9/9

💔Please, world, hear the voices of Afghan women. Slogans alone are not enough.
Last night, one of our members from Afghanistan heard a woman and her daughters screaming and crying as the husband was beating them. By morning, the woman’s body was covered in bruises, and her daughters were also in a bad condition. When we asked what had happened, we learned that the husband wanted to marry a second wife and was telling his first wife that she could not have Son . When the wife and daughters opposed his decision, he started beating them.
💔 This is the respect women and girls receive inside their own homes. Outside their homes, schools and workplaces are closed to them, and they have been erased from society.
Please, world, hear the voices of Afghan women. Slogans alone are not enough.💔

One of the most disturbing aspects of this unfolding scandal is how successfully the public has been kept in the dark. If people understood the full extent of what has been happening to vulnerable children, I believe the outrage would be overwhelming.
What the ideologues driving this agenda have achieved, with the willing connivance of progressive political parties and much of the media, is extraordinary. They’ve managed to dress up a child harming scandal as an emancipation movement, and present potentially devastating, irreversible interventions on vulnerable children as acts of kindness and compassion.
And this is where I believe my own employer, the BBC, bears enormous responsibility. Had it subjected these claims to robust scrutiny from the outset, rather than actively promoting gender ideology, how many vulnerable children might have been spared life-altering harm that can never be undone?
There have, of course, been notable exceptions at the BBC: a handful of journalists who have asked the difficult questions.
But the occasional investigation on Newsnight or Panorama hardly has the same cut-through as the stories the BBC relentlessly promotes across its platforms.
Consider how much attention Meghan Markle is receiving right now, compared with the scrutiny devoted to vulnerable children undergoing puberty suppression or irreversible surgery in the name of so-called progress.
The BBC knows perfectly well how to make an issue impossible to ignore. The question is, why hasn’t it? Well, we know why: institutional capture.
When the reckoning comes, as it surely will, and the children harmed by these interventions grow into adults forced to live with the devastating, irreversible consequences, those who were supposed to protect them must be held accountable for their betrayal.
So too must the political and media establishment that put progressive virtue-signalling ahead of safeguarding vulnerable children, and ideological conformity ahead of confronting the harm being done.
And I fear that the BBC, which has failed a generation of vulnerable young people so comprehensively, will find itself engulfed in the greatest scandal of its history.
Extraordinary testimony from Baroness Cass yesterday on the profile of children who will be part of the *Puberty Blockers Trial*. Little kids who have been 'socially transitioned' from early childhood. Harmed by their parents - reinforced by the State... @Transgendertrd 1/

We are literally entering a dystopian timeline. 😤
We have all the resources and money to protect the remaining forests worldwide, yet rich companies/people are deciding to finish them all off for DATA CENTRES! 🤦🏻♂️🤬
Google illegally cleared an estimated 250,000 trees across 330 hectares of forest in Muhos, northern Finland, to prepare for a new AI data center before completing mandatory environmental impact assessments
And another 150,000 trees felled at Otanmäki

Yet concludes a lack of PPE was the problem.

A Critical Moment to Protect Antarctic Wildlife
Governments will soon meet to decide the future of one of the most precious places on Earth
The Antarctic Peninsula is the centre of an industrial krill fishery Krill may be small, but they are the lifeblood of the Southern Ocean for whales, penguins, seabirds and countless other species
Yet, fishing vessels are increasingly targeting the same feeding grounds that wildlife depends on to survive

These rainforests were the most IMPORTANT to protect BEFORE the fires!🚨‼️
Now it is beyond critical, the majority of these animals will go extinct this decade if we don’t act!

Maybe why one of the greatest, immoral crimes of recent years, burning the most biodiverse habitat in the world and everything in it to death, is getting the tumbleweed treatment from our media!
I’m angry about the air in Singapore. It is not an act of nature. It is intentional.
Indonesian palm oil exports to the EU have surged this year due to implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation.
The Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) will be signed soon and enter into force next year, dropping EU import tariffs on palm oil to zero. Business is booming.
Indonesian farmers are clearing land this year to capitalise on the growth opportunity.
More than El Niño is responsible for the choking haze blanketing Singapore. Trade policy and poor governance plays a big role.

Speak to any hard-bitten older farmer around me in Somerset, or anywhere in Britain, and they will tell you that they grew up among fields teeming with corncrakes, grass snakes, hares, hedges full of yellowhammers and other songbirds, car windscreens splattered with bugs after the shortest summer drive, nearly all now gone. 98% of wildflowers, gone. Huge shoals of herring, cod, and other fish in the sea, a distant memory. Across almost every indicator, the losses during just one human lifetime have been catastrophic. The data is all there, as are the anecdotes. Britain is among the most nature-depleted countries on earth.
Replying to @TrooperSnooks @p4rus
We are not the most nature depleted country. That's just a myth. We are one of the most human altered countries, i.e. one with the least amount of truly wild places. Our biodiversity is actually quite high for a small country, partly as a result of human intervention.

The only answer to the surging overpopulation of deer in Britain is wolves.
In northern Spain, just ~0.3% of deer have TB.
In southern Spain it’s ~30%.
The difference is that the north still has wolves.
Wolves sniff out unwell deer and eat them. It’s so blindingly obvious.
I have been harping on about the repercussions of our deer over population for years, largely in the context of hedgerow and woodland damage. Now it's as a TB vector.
It's now time for serious action...and no, the solution isn't wolves.
