ARS researchers and their partners are exploring new ways to bolster the resistance of grain crops like rice, wheat, and barley to fungal diseases. According to the scientists, resistance works best when a plant’s immune system can quickly recognize its fungal attacker. Thanks to “molecular mimicry”—an evolutionary adaptation—ARS scientists are working to harness sturdier crop varieties that can fend off fungal attacks.

Although “Beowulf” has been traditionally interpreted as meaning “bee-wolf” (a kenning for bears) or beado-wulf (“war-wolf”), philologists & mythologists suggest Beowulf’s name (& early lineage) may draw from the Anglo-Saxon barley god, Beowa…

Kiln it or keep it? 🔥
Lager, Munich & Caramel 90°C malts from 4 barley varieties, profiled with LC-MS. Malt type drove most of the 609 metabolites, BUT varietal differences survived the kiln. Find out more in the article below 👇🏻

Our BEST-CROP project enhanced barley lines completed their growth season in the field in the Czech Republic, thanks to Palacký University Olomouc and Usovsko food a.s., which run the accredited facility for field testing of GM barley in the EU.
This year we followed enhanced ozone tolerance under real growing conditions: no climate chambers, no ideal weather, just nature as it came.

⚠️ Barley scald is re-emerging as a serious management issue in Western Australia, prompting a fast-tracked GRDC National Grower Network investment with @DPIRDbroadacre.
For growers, the current advice is to avoid relying on a single control measure, reduce barley-on-barley rotations, manage infected stubble, rotate fungicide groups and report suspected outbreaks.

Barley comes in way more shades than you'd think! 🌾 We’re using the Oregon Wolfe Barley population, an amazing genetics teaching tool developed by the folks at OSU, to help bring plant biology to the public. It’s a perfect visual of the black lemma and pericarp locus (Blp1).

#Barley is one of the world’s major cereal crops. In the #EU alone, around 10 million hectares are cultivated each year, producing roughly 50 million tonnes of grain for #malting, #feed and #food.
But grain is only part of the story. For every tonne of barley grain, the crop also produces roughly 0.7 tonnes of straw, a type of biomass that too often stays a low-value by-product.
BEST-CROP project works on both ends of the barley plant: more efficient #photosynthesis above ground, and #straw designed from the start to become materials, forage and bio-based products.
