I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

That story about Google killing hundreds of thousands of trees in Finland for its data center project is such a perfect microcosm of what capitalism is doing to our world. Recent mass media headlines are saying the tech giant "illegally" cut down "250,000" trees, but both claims paint an inaccurate picture of what actually happened. Google killed 400,000 trees (250,000 near a town called Muhos and another 150,000 near the village of Otanmäki), and unless the company's executives actually wind up going to prison for this, their actions cannot properly be described as "illegal". I don't know who first coined the saying "If the penalty is a fine, then it's legal for rich people," but it certainly applies here. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has reportedly ordered Google to suspend all “measures that significantly change the environment," saying it will "consider enforcement proceedings and fines" if the megacorporation does not comply. Google's parent company Alphabet has a net worth of around four trillion dollars. Whatever paltry penalties Finland might impose for these ecocidal actions, it won't have any meaningful effect on Google. Giant corporations do this shit all the time. They calculate that the fines incurred by their abusive actions will be dwarfed by the massive profits they generate, issue fake apologies as needed, and leave it to their armies of lawyers to minimize the damage. That's why the Sackler family is still worth billions despite all the fines Purdue Pharma was slapped with while creating the US opiate epidemic. A 2017 Harvard study titled “The Opioid Epidemic: Fixing a Broken Pharmaceutical Market" contains the following paragraph: "Although civil claims and criminal charges were brought against Purdue and its executives, the resulting penalties paled in comparison to extended-release oxycodone profits. In May 2007, the company and its president, chief counsel, and former chief medical officer pled guilty to falsely marketing extended-release oxycodone as 'less addictive, less subject to abuse and diversion, and less likely to cause tolerance and withdrawal than other pain medications.' As part of the plea bargain, Purdue agreed to pay the federal government $600 million and 27 states $20 million. The three executives agreed to $34.5 million in fines but avoided jailtime. By contrast, Purdue has earned an estimated $31 billion in total revenues from extended-release oxycodone since its launch. Rather than deterring fraudulent marketing, the penalties simply became a cost of doing business." A cost of doing business. That's how things work under capitalism. The law primarily exists not to protect people or the environment, but to protect the interests of capital. If you destroyed a Google data center you'd probably be charged as a terrorist and spend decades in prison, but Google can destroy the natural world around you and get off with a finger wag and a symbolic fine. If you stole millions of dollars from your employer you'd go to prison for grand larceny, but if your employer steals millions from its employees you need to win a class action lawsuit to get back what they stole from you. Proponents of capitalism often pretend they support minimal government intervention in civilian affairs, but their entire model is at all times propped up by state power using force to protect the haves from the have-nots at every level of our society. Corporations are free to destroy the environment, destroy your health, rob you, exploit you, and manipulate your government to their advantage, and if you ever take action to stand up to this world-devouring onslaught, the state will lock you in a cage. In school we are taught that that the law exists to protect ordinary people from bad people, but that's not true at all. Under capitalism, the law exists to protect the very worst among us from everyone else. That's why we are seeing our planet being turned into dust and ashes for no reason other than shareholder profit. It's an insane system, and it needs to end. These freaks are feeding our entire biosphere into the woodchipper.

🍅Britain is in a cost of living crisis. 50+% of food we buy in supermarkets is now own-label. Tinned tomatoes cost just 43p in supermarkets. So...how on earth has @MuttiPomodoro – costing £1.60 – become the UK no1 tinned tomato brand? I went to Parma to find out... 🧵1/6

Mission flour tortillas have 11 ingredients. A tortilla needs 4, flour, water, fat and salt. The bag lists enriched bleached flour, water, vegetable shortening made from interesterified and hydrogenated soybean oils, then 2% or less of salt, sugar, baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, distilled monoglycerides, fumaric acid, calcium propionate and sorbic acid. The shortening is soybean oil that was hardened in a reactor so it acts like lard at room temperature. Baking soda and sodium acid pyrophosphate are a baking powder split in two, so the tortilla puffs on the hot plate in the plant. Distilled monoglycerides are an emulsifier. They keep the starch from going stale and hard, which is why a Mission tortilla is still soft weeks after you bought it. Fumaric acid drops the pH, and calcium propionate and sorbic acid stop mold in a bag that isn't refrigerated.

I’m in Switzerland with Nexus – Tyne and Wear Metro, looking at cost-effective electrification renewals. Much of what makes this work efficient is what the UK sector has been calling for for a long time; it has just been put into practice. A few lessons (1/7) 🧵

Shabby to whitewash @carolecadwalla’s role in exposing Russia’s role in Brexit years ago. She deserves immense credit for her bravery and tenacity as a journalist.
When the Guardian went on strike to protest the Observer sale, I became a de facto spokesperson. Later a Tortoise employee I’d never met wrote to me to cancel my 20-year contract. No goodbye & no pay-off. This is how they now take credit for my work..but write me out of the story

1. THE GREATEST ACT OF FUCKING TREASON IN BRITISH HISTORY - The hiding of the report by the joint intelligence committee on the threats to UK security of the climate crisis and collapse of critically important ecosystems. It is totally beyond me that the British people are being subjected to the greatest ever grotesque act of tyrannical fuckery and everyone in the public sphere is going "Oh well, how upsetting". The security forces are saying that this country has "no future". What the fuck do we think this means? This is the same old same old British establishment routine that said we were experiencing "difficulties" on the western front in WW1 when literally thousands of young men were being blown to bits everyday. Millions more bodies are about to be sacrificed as the El Nino is turned into another mass killing machine by the pathological elites' refusal to slash emissions. The most fucked thing about this is that somehow Ed Miliband is being made out as our man in the thick of it as he waves bits of paper about peace in our time. Why the fuck doesn't he threaten to resign unless the report is published in full? Because he has absolutely zero guts. He does not a give flying fuck about this being a democracy - rule by us not him. When did we decide we are just dumb serfs to be fed into the final mass meat grinder rather than citizens whose fucking government actually belongs to us, not to the Labour Party? Why isn't someone, anyone, screaming - "we fucking demand the report in full because we are not fucking idiots ready to roll over and die". FUCK! Chronology: October 2025 - Report due to be published, but publication was cancelled. 14 October 2025 - Baroness Boycott raises the report in the House of Lords. The government declines to comment. Late 2025 - Ruth Chambers of Green Alliance submits an FOI request for the report. The request is initially refused on national security grounds. 20 January 2026 - The government publishes a 14-page version of the report following the FOI request. 27 January 2026 - The Guardian reports that the published version is significantly shorter than the original report. May 2026 - The Environmental Audit Committee asks the government for the full report. The request is refused. July 2026 - The Environmental Audit Committee raises the issue again. The full report is still withheld. 23 September 2026 - Ed Miliband briefs foreign ministers at a private meeting during the UN General Assembly in New York on climate change and ecosystem degradation as national security risks. 24 September 2026 - The UK government publishes a statement about the Foreign Ministers Dialogue co-hosted by Miliband, the EU and Kenya. September 2026 - The full report remains unpublished, although sections of its contents have been reported by The Times, The Guardian and ITV. - .GOV press release about the above 24/9/26 : gov.uk/government/news/press… - Guardian 23/9/26 : theguardian.com/environment/… - Parliament Debate 3/9/26 (skip to Adrian Ramsay) : hansard.parliament.uk/common… - Parliament Research Briefing 2/9/26 : commonslibrary.parliament.uk… - Environmental Audit Committee 8/7/26 : committees.parliament.uk/ora… - Environmental Audit Committee 18/5/26 : committees.parliament.uk/ora… - Ruth Chambers/Green Alliance who requested the report via FOI 29/1/26 : greenallianceblog.org.uk/202… - Monbiot/Guardian 27/1/26 : theguardian.com/commentisfre… - Times 23/1/26 : drive.google.com/file/d/1URu… - .GOV 14 page summary released under a FOI request 20/1/26 : assets.publishing.service.go… - Baroness Boycott House Lords 14/10/26 : hansard.parliament.uk/lords/… - Times 8/10/25 : drive.google.com/file/d/1DeF…

My sister's longtime dentist practice got bought out by a private equity-backed dental group four months ago. Same office. Same hygienists. Same chairs. Zero new equipment. Last week they sent the new fee schedule for anyone with insurance. A routine cleaning that used to run $120 is now billed at $310, with the group quietly dropping several insurance plans they used to accept. When patients asked why, the new regional manager gave a scripted line about "aligning with market standards." Private equity figured out the same trick everywhere. They're buying up the things you can't opt out of: dental, veterinary care, urgent care, hospice, because they know you can't just skip your kid's cavity or your dog's surgery. This isn't inflation. It's leveraged debt getting loaded onto places you have no choice but to keep paying.

Wow Rees-Mogg. I finally agree with him.
Tucker Carlson defends Hitler’s decision to invade Poland, arguing that Britain shouldn’t have fought the Nazis: “The UK had nothing to do with it, at all, and they destroyed their empire and their country fighting this war that they still pretend was a good idea, but it wasn’t”

A lot to unpack. Jenrick, as a Tory watched as the PPE scandal and routine theft of British assets sold to mates happened. Billions of pounds. Shop theft is a problem and never justifiable. But the kind of defunding, austerity, destruction of communities via managed decline, over decades leads to the woman we see on the video. She is obviously malnourished, she literally looks like a thousand people we all see on towns across the country. Desperate, feral, uncaring and looking very poorly indeed. Living in communities who've been left behind. Again, theft is wrong. But this clout chasing bastard "outing" people who are symptom of 40 years of Tory policy, is as we say in Cannock, "a cunt's trick". When a country invests in its people, doesn't create managed decline creating feral, outside of the law micro communities, doesn't invest in schools, civics, inclusion, and allows the cancer of exploiting benefits to flourish, this is what we get. A woman being hounded for clout when he should be hounding Michelle Mone in Monaco. Fucking bastard.

Not as worried as your GP about your cholesterol bud.
Worried Greens send to London members: “We are entering the most important seven days our party has ever seen. That is why I have crunched the numbers to share with you first. 10,000+ conversations on the doorstep tell us one thing. Zack can win, but only if you are here this weekend in Holborn & St Pancras united behind him. The outcome of this election, and the direction of this country, comes down to just a few hundred undecided voters. Momentum is with us but it is make or break. We need at least 2,000 people this weekend. More voters are not home when we knock, because London is on the go. So we need double the volunteers as Gorton & Denton just to reach the same number of people.”

Telegraph.
Have been lectured on the perils of too much immigration by my Uber driver who comes from Romania, shares a house in Wembley with six other Romanians, and wants to bring his adult son to the UK from Romania. He adds that the UK is not what it was, but it is better than Romania.

Give your ticket back. Solved.
I have a private corporate invite to view Bayeaux Tapestry next week @britishmuseum for which I am grateful but I can't help noticing there are a lot of stories of non corporate punters with purchased tickets being turned away mid way through queuing: what is BM doing about this?

The pots are smashing against the kettles. Bless.
Manchester United can sit under £1.1bn+ of debt and outstanding transfer fees, but an owner pumping money INTO a club to challenge them is where football suddenly discovers “sustainability.” What a fucking system.
