Grok says the best estimates show @elonmusk is responsible for at least 500,000 deaths so far and millions over the coming years due to his destruction of USAID.
Replying to @joshrogin
Reliable estimates vary by methodology and assumptions. A July 2025 Lancet study projected over 14 million excess deaths by 2030 (uncertainty 8.5-19.7 million), including 4.5 million children under 5, from an 83% USAID cut, based on historical mortality reductions. Center for Global Development analyses of 2025 spending put annual lives lost at 500,000-1.6 million. Boston University’s Impact Counter estimated 750,000-781,000 deaths in the first year. Actual totals remain uncertain due to disrupted data and other factors.

Billionaires buying elections will always be a greater threat to democracy than the 0.0001% of votes that are cast by undocumented immigrants.
NEW — A filing cited by Politico shows Elon Musk put another $76 million into efforts to boost Republicans, bringing his total spending this cycle to $442 million.

Whenever I see ppl criticizing former students for college debt, I think of those PPP loans that the govt automatically forgave, as in actual free money. The interest is what kills, no one should have to pay $90k on a $40k student loan and still owe thousands and remain in debt
What’s fucked up about this too is that none of the department of educations repayment plans do any favors for borrowers. They are all dog shit repayment plans designed to keep you in debt your entire life

The maximum amount someone can legally donate to a candidate is $3500. Elon Musk is allowed to buy an election because Citizens United gave billionaires like him a loophole to undermine democracy. Billionaires are a bigger threat to elections than immigrants ever could be.

What is the point of inviting on liars every night in prime time to lie again and again and then have the host and other panelists call out the lie? Who does this help? How is this journalism? Why not just not invite her back on again once she has demonstrably + shamelessly lied?

He stopped the shooter, but he didn't stop the shooting. That's the difference. Three kids and their teacher were already dead, and an unarmed teacher had tackled him first. YOU spent decades blocking laws that keep guns away from kids. Now you're taking a victory lap? Fuck that.
“The NRA wants you to focus on how this was stopped…” Correct. A heroic armed citizen saved innocent lives. Your failed gun control policies and “Gun-Free Zone” stickers did not.

People are keen to blame anyone but themselves for the fact that recreational reading is in its death throes. The awful truth is that we were born into the most literate era in history, we had access to all the world's knowledge, and we willingly gave it up.
Everyone blames screens for the decline of reading. Nobody blames the consolidated corporate publishing industry that made books pricier, more generic, and harder to find. jacobin.com/2026/10/books-pu…

why is it always “we cut thousands of employees to save money” and never “we cut millions from our CEOs salaries to save money”
Netflix is laying off around 1,000 employees, representing 6% of its workforce, in what is the streamer's biggest layoff to date. Most of the layoffs will affect workers in Netflix’s product, technology, legal and HR teams. “Our mission — to entertain the world — is ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources,” co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters wrote in an email. variety.com/2026/tv/news/net…

It’s important to ask yourself, “How did we end up in a world where the act of reading is more embarrassing than not reading?” There’s a reason the children of CEOs attend schools where screens are forbidden while public school kids are increasingly unable to read. We’ve been fed relentless propaganda about how books are for losers because a literate population threatens the unchecked power of the super-wealthy.
I think "reading a book is performative" is the end point of American anti-intellectualism. The mere act of reading is now suspicious to swaths of slug people.

Billionaires buying elections and spending millions to spread misinformation and propaganda does infinitely more damage to our "election integrity," than the less than 0.0001% ballots cast by undocumented immigrants.

🚨 Online traffic to the entire European far-right collapsing after a successful Ukrainian attack on a Russian data centre feels like quite a big story.
If confirmed, this is telling: Russian data centres get hit, and online activity around AfD suddenly plummets. 📉 So much talk about German patriotism… then the connection from Russia goes down. 🤔🇷🇺

The maximum amount an individual can donate to a candidate is $3500. Elon Musk has spent $366 million on the 2026 midterms — so far. Billionaires shouldn’t be allowed to buy elections — and this shouldn’t be controversial to anyone who claims to care about “election integrity.”

We are in the heyday of movies about tech founders which recognize their subjects are terrible people but cannot abandon this belief that they are geniuses who were just too ambitious. These people are petty, stupid, and cynical. Any other representation is hagiography.
All in. Every time. Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle star as Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried in this limited series about the love scorned prodigies behind the FTX scandal. The Altruists premieres November 19.

BEZOS: “We have real affordability problems.” 48.4% of Amazon workers are paid so little that they’re forced to rely on taxpayer-funded social safety nets, like Medicaid and SNAP, to survive. The affordability problem is a billionaire greed problem.
Q: Why is socialism taking off in some quarters? BEZOS: We have real affordability problems. Housing is a good example—it's a place where a lot of the government intervention that has happened has been counterproductive. If you put in place government programs that subsidize demand and constrain supply, you are going to get high prices.

The only institution responding thoughtfully to AI is the 2000 year old Roman Imperial Church.
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
