If I’d never been to Ukraine, I’d probably oppose it.
From afar, to those quite tired of Washington's games, Ukraine might look like another endless U.S. war—pushed by media spin, the defense industry, and Hunter Biden’s Burisma connections. Even Hollywood seemed in on it until they got bored.
And I’d think the 2014 Maidan Revolution was staged by some State Department lady handing out cookies.

I was inspired to make this while delivering supplies to the frontline with American supporter Jim Gamache and Ukrainian civil society volunteer leader Max Burtsev, @McSimba , who also considers this his favorite poem, words which we recited on our Donbas roadtrip.
Notably: In the ancient and still flourishing Ukrainian language, the word for “if” literally means “how-what”: a workman like idea of how to achieve the impossible. And Ukrainian has two words for will: a basic sense of it, буде / bude, and something higher, holier: воля / volya, the deep will to be free.

KHARKIV—“And all shall be well and / All manner of thing shall be well,” wrote T.S. Eliot, echoing the English mystic Julian of Norwich. These words resonated for me, on a Donbas highway on the eve of the two-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
As I ran through Kharkiv Friday, I saw a cafe that the Russians destroyed last month already nearly rebuilt, even though at any moment it could be destroyed again. And as I drove through Donbas Sunday, I saw towns rebuilding even under the constant threat of more destruction.
This is resilience. This is freedom.
“In my beginning is my end. In succession
Houses rise and fall, crumble, are extended,
Are removed, destroyed, restored, or in their place
Is an open field, or a factory, or a by-pass.
Old stone to new building, old timber to new fires,
Old fires to ashes, and ashes to the earth.
