It's an unspoken fact that freely moving lab mice are not really freely moving. We came up with a method to change this. See the preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… (1/3)
Congrats to @mingfaifong, on receiving the @RPB_org Walt and Lilly Disney Award for Amblyopia Research!
Fong will use the award to further research to improve the lives of individuals with amblyopia, or lazy eye. bit.ly/3K5Lofy
How do neurons homeostatically maintain firing rate? Synaptic scaling? Yes, but not at the synapses you might think... check out our preprint showing that GABAergic scaling acts as a firing rate homeostat. Study led by Carlos Gonzalez-Islas and Pete Wenner.
GABAergic synaptic scaling is triggered by changes in spiking activity rather than transmitter receptor activation. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… #biorxiv_neursci

Textbooks say #amblyopia isn't treatable after "critical period" (age 7-9)
Fascinating #NEIfunded @MIT_Picower study: this may not be true.
Even *after* critical period in model systems: temporary inactivation of retinal activity in better eye led to improved amblyopia...
