I am shocked, absolutely shocked, that Anthropic ARR has likely gone vertical in October after they cut token prices. Except the exact same thing happened for the entire AI market, which is why GPU rental prices have surged while token prices declined. $100b plus in year-end ARR looks possible again.

In an environment where the Fed is raising rates and Treasury yields remain high, the pace of AI infrastructure investment comes under pressure. In other words, the AI revolution slows down. Especially for companies dependent on external financing, expensive debt and falling stock prices restrict both funding channels at the same time. In an environment where the Fed was cutting rates, credit conditions were improving, and stock prices were rising, both borrowing and raising capital through dilution could have been easier! Since the market would be rallying, dilution wouldn’t have been a problem. Companies could also have raised debt through bonds. Today, these companies face pressure in the opposite direction. The growth rate of the AI revolution isn’t independent of the cost of the capital financing it. This isn’t something I’m saying for the first time. I’ve been saying the same thing ever since it became clear that Fed rate hikes would be back on the table.

AI is a bubble. Bitcoin is going to Zero. The market is going to crash. Just another week of rational thinking.
I spoke with @jvisserlabs this week to break down @chamath's claim that bitcoin is going to zero, the real quantum computing risk, the historic hedge fund unwind, and why AI is now smarter than all of us. We also discuss using AI as a life coach, genetically modified war dogs, and why Eli Lilly ($LLY) could become the biggest company in America. The U.S. Economy Is Collateral Damage In A Much Larger Geopolitical Strategy Conflicts in Ukraine, Iran and Venezuela suggest a wider struggle over energy, industrial independence and dollar supremacy. I believe Washington will tolerate domestic economic damage if competing economies deteriorate faster and the dollar remains indispensable. Nord Stream And Europe’s Dependence Nord Stream’s destruction disabled 3 of 4 pipeline strings, making Germany’s energy relationship with Russia far harder to restore. Moscow lost a route into European industry, Germany lost an energy alternative, and American LNG gained strategic importance. In February 2022, Biden said Nord Stream 2 would end if Russia invaded Ukraine. 7 months later, explosions crippled the infrastructure. The timing warrants scrutiny but does not establish American responsibility. German investigators have pursued suspects linked to Ukraine. Had Washington been responsible, the payoff would have been enormous. Regardless, the destruction weakened the prospect of a European industrial bloc built around German manufacturing and Russian energy. Energy Control And Maritime Limits Pressure on Iran and Venezuela constrains alternative energy supplies, including those purchased by China. Sanctions, shipping insurance and dollar financing extend American influence over global energy commerce. Yet naval superiority does not guarantee maritime control. Iran does not need to defeat the U.S. Navy. Drones, mines and antiship missiles can make Hormuz sufficiently dangerous and expensive to disrupt energy flows. This is sea denial rather than sea control. Stablecoins And The Digital Dollar Endgame Under the GENIUS Act, regulated American payment stablecoin issuers must maintain reserves backing outstanding tokens at least 1 to 1. Eligible reserves include short term U.S. Treasuries, cash, qualifying bank deposits and certain Treasury backed instruments. Expanding global demand for new dollar stablecoins can therefore create additional demand for American government debt. If stablecoin circulation eventually reaches $1 trillion and 80% of reserves are allocated to Treasury securities and Treasury backed instruments, that represents approximately $800 billion in Treasury linked exposure, although not necessarily $800 billion of entirely new demand. Governments may attempt to escape dollar dependence while their own populations increasingly adopt digital dollars to protect purchasing power from currency depreciation. During a synchronized global contraction, demand for dollar liquidity could intensify through traditional financial markets and stablecoins, strengthening demand for Treasury bills while extending American monetary influence beyond conventional banks. Stablecoins also preserve financial enforcement through regulated issuers, reserve custody and sanctions compliance. Alternative payment infrastructure does not necessarily mean independence from the dollar system. The Calculation Of Relative Power The premise is that American supremacy depends less on absolute prosperity than on economic strength relative to competing nations. If Europe, China and other industrial centers deteriorate faster, Washington could theoretically preserve its financial dominance despite domestic inflation, recession and hardship. Yet America’s energy dependent allies could suffer disproportionately while China accelerates Russian energy partnerships, nuclear power, electrification and alternative financial arrangements. A strategy designed to preserve dependence could ultimately encourage greater independence. Stablecoins could temporarily reinforce dollar dominance, but mass redemptions could force reserve liquidation, while deliberately weakening trading partners risks undermining confidence in the financial system. What if economic destruction is not a failure of the strategy, but a calculated price Washington believes it can afford to preserve dollar supremacy?

Could it be that the Iran War was waged to tighten FCI and keep capital allocation tightly knit to the ones who can handle it to prevent asset bubbles? Essentially QE was needed to prop up capital that went to businesses that shouldn’t have gotten it without low rates and accommodation of policy. Now, the playbook may be flipped. Concentrate capital in the only businesses that can reliably deliver.
Ed Yardeni sees AI investment continuing but tempered by market concerns which has seen the Mag-7 underperform the "other 493" by almost four percent through Thursday's close: We view market-driven tightening access to capital as healthy for the AI boom, resulting in more efficient capital allocation and reducing over-investment risks. Importantly, we expect the key players to retain financing access. The five major hyperscalers (Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle) alone are projected to spend almost $780 billion in 2026. Over each of the following four years, from 2027 through 2030, that figure is expected to exceed $1 trillion annually. Their strong cash flows, balance sheets, and market access should allow them to continue investing in AI.

Agentic favors MAGS over the frontiers… Until the frontiers have loyal distribution and a history of developing, I see this continuing.
Muse hit 10.2M U.S. downloads in its first 40 days versus 3.7M for ChatGPT showing how powerful $META distribution advantage is. Even more impressive is Muse retaining 30% of users after 7 days versus just 19% for competing AI apps showing people are actually sticking around.

Finally, and now for something completely different. There has been some buzz lately over what other tricks the Treasury Department might have up its sleeve to try to bring down the cost of funding. The long-dated off-the-run buybacks certainly didn’t work (other than daring the bond vigilantes to show us who is in charge). Now an old meme has re-emerged. What if the Treasury were to mark-to-market its gold reserves, which the Fed holds on its behalf? Imagine if they repriced their gold holdings from the $42/oz that has been in place since the early 1970’s to the $4,200/oz that gold is worth today? The Treasury would become an instant $1 trillion richer (hence the trillion-dollar coin meme that has floated around for a few years). How would that work? It seems to work as follows: The Fed would all of a sudden have an extra $1 trillion in assets (grey bar at the top right of the chart below) on its balance sheet, and the liability offset would be the Treasury’s cash account at the Fed (TGA). Voila, the Treasury would have an extra trillion to spend without having to issue more debt. 🧵(1/2)
