Australia's economic downturn will be much harsher & longer than many experts are predicting. Am I qualified to make such a statement? Well, while I'm a lawyer by training I also hold an Honours degree in Economics. I also lived through 2 severe recessions, namely 1982/83 & 1990/91. What I was able to ascertain is that no expert tipped the severity of both downturns - they all expected a "soft landing" It was anything but a soft landing with the economy contracting in both downturns & unemployment almost doubling to over 10%. We only need to listen to retailers and builders to get a sense the economy is rapidly decelerating. Add recent interest rate rises (which can take 6-12 months to fully impact the economy) & it's not a pretty picture going forward. 2 key economic indicators I'm closely monitoring are household spending and job vacancies. Watch this space.

Dwelling rents are falling in Sydney, slowing elsewhere: 3 cheers for fruitful economic policy.
Dwelling rents in Sydney fell 0.4% in the Sep qtr, Australia wide rents rose a puny 0.5% in the quarter - all the while the rental vacancy rate rose to 2.1%.
It looks like first home buyers are leaving their rental properties & buying their dwelling, assisted by the deposit scheme, falling house prices, rising incomes & a raft of other financial incentives.
While there is undoubtedly a raft of discussion points in these schemes, if in the end we have more people owning their house, downward pressure on rents & improved affordability, the foibles are probably worth it.
