women can make a calculated choice to be fascist without needing to be held hostage by fascist men or suffering from some sudden mental break. we don’t need to do this damselification and infantilization every time a woman, especially one in a position of power, shows herself as a collaborator. specifically, white women have historically benefited from this societal shield and the benevolent sexism-chivalry effect that bestows a naivety and harmlessness upon them.

Patrick Stewart, who died today at 86, became Professor X and Captain Picard. As a boy, he watched his father beat his mother, and heard the doctors who came to help tell her it was her own fault. In the video below, a woman thanks him for helping her survive her own abuse, and his answer brings the whole room to its feet. He grew up in a poor mill town in England. His father came home from World War II a different man and turned his violence on Patrick's mother. Every time the doctors and ambulance men came, they told her she must have provoked him, that it takes two to make an argument. Decades later, Stewart learned from his father's war records that he had been suffering from severe shell shock that was never treated. So he spent the rest of his life working for two charities: one for abused women, in his mother's name, and one for traumatized soldiers, in his father's. He could have spent his life hating his father. Instead, he spent it helping others. Is that the kind of legacy that matters more than fame?

The ironic thing about the internet's obsession with "holding people accountable" is that it's created an environment where taking accountability hold zero benefit whatsoever.

The WASP method of torture is to subtly take away all your rights and pleasures in just enough of a plausibly deniable way (and just never admitting it outright) that when you finally crack they can point and say "see, I knew you were a bad apple deserving of punishment."

I have watched so many radical spaces be destroyed by petty, cruel people who weaponize minor transgressions for their own self interest. I suspect a big reason that the lesbian bar story is blowing up is because so many of us have and are just absolutely fed up with it.

I think that socialist/communist spaces really do suffer from letting radical liberals come into them and set the rules. Mass politics is an anathema to radlibs and individualist narcissism ends up being framed as somehow revolutionary when it is actual poison to movements.

Shut the company down, remove all the cameras. Send every executive and lobbyist who wanted this to prison forever.
Hackers ripped a Flock camera off a pole, dumped what was stored on it, and handed the files to WIRED and 404 Media. One camera. 21 days. ~50,000 vehicles. 1.6 million images. About 3,300 cars a day. Peak day: 4,454. Flock sold this as “license plate readers” with on-device encryption. The software on that box wasn’t just reading plates. It was tagging vehicles, bikes, and people. Dozens of shots of a single car. Bumper stickers. Even an American flag patch on a motorcycle bag. They put the encryption key on the camera. Then acted shocked when somebody opened it.

probably the worst thing about being a victim of anything is that 90% of the time you still HAVE to be quiet about it. like even if everyone would believe you theres just so many other reasons

This is very sad news. She was just 60 Her book Who Paid the Piper? on the CIA's covert manipulation of our culture is one of most important history/politics books of my lifetime I met her a few years ago and she said was considering doing a sequel I also interviewed her for a story about the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) in 2022 “The NED is the umbilical cord of gold that leads directly back to Washington,” she told me. “And by this I’m not only referring to official US government programmes, but to the vast network of clandestine players that plan and enact its information warfare operations” She added: “The cultural Cold War has never gone away, it’s just shifted from target to target" Edward Said reviewed her book on CIA for LRB in 1999. The term "emotional labor" has undergone quite a bit of semantic drift, but this post is a great example of its original meaning: the demand that workers regulate their own display of emotions to satisfy clients, bosses, and customers It also highlights how demands for such
We got energy bowls yesterday, and there were 4 teenage girls working the shop. Baby boy came with us and he was toddling around being an absolute joy, smiling and laughing at everyone. Not a single one of the teenage girls looked at, smiled, or said a word to him. Are we cooked?

Not to be dramatic but smthing v close to this happened @ my last workplace. The part that messes w/you isnt even 1 person disliking you, it’s watching a narrative about you become socially useful enough that ppl start coordinating around it w/o ever having to formally “conspire”
Social sabotage, is founded on a destructive purpose of keeping someone from being successful or attaining a high level of social standing and success by sabotaging their victims at ever step possible. It is a highly criminal campaign, many times involving many other individuals

A popular recycled tweet asks “At what point did everything in society get worse?” the true answer is 9/11. I read the other day the reason the 25th anniversary weighs heavier than usual was because in past anniversaries, there was a sense of healing and moving forward;
9/11 is hitting me harder than usual this year It's not because I ever forgot, because I certainly didn't I think it's because I'm acutely aware of how much things have changed since then
