The Frey effect, also known as the microwave auditory effect, is an acoustic phenomenon where pulsed or modulated microwave radiation induces audible sounds directly inside the human head.
First documented by neuroscientist Allan H. Frey in 1961, the effect is caused by thermoelastic expansion of cranial tissues; rapid, microscopic heating from microwave pulses generates pressure waves that travel via bone conduction to the cochlea.
