Australia often follows trends seen in nearby countries, so these variants are worth watching. That doesn’t mean we’re heading back to 2020. It simply means SARS-CoV-2 continues to evolve, and variants with even a small transmission advantage tend to become dominant over time. The virus hasn’t stopped evolving. Keeping an eye on variant surveillance helps us understand what may be coming next, while remembering that increasing spread does not automatically mean increasing severity.
