Burnley 22nd in the Championship, players not responding to coach Nicky Hayen, whacked 4-1 by Lincoln City, so no great surprise that Hayen sacked after 14 games (one win). But… even by football standards the club's curt 26-word dismissal statement is unnecessarily brutal (and naïve) for four reasons...
First, it’s classless towards a departing member of staff, however underachieving, so what does that say about the owners’ treatment of people? What message does it send to potential successors?
Second, Hayen was the board’s appointment. What does that say about their judgement? Nb: new technical director incoming who should understand football better than chairman Alan Pace.
Third, it highlights the mess, not least in recruitment, that Hayen stepped into. Did he have a chance? Relegated squad, sold best players (last two club POTYs Flemming & Esteve + Anthony), is there enough fight in the team?
Fourth, highlights the club’s financial problems. Burnley used to be well-run.
Board have to make the right appointment, remember Burnley are a football club as well as a business and engage better with increasingly disaffected fans. Burnley fans deserve better than what Pace and ALK Capital are giving them. #twitterclarets

What a win!! Probably the most impressive home win in years. Ran the opposition off their feet with pace and the ambition to play to space. Impressive growth in offloading and short / long edge attack under Gerard Mullen. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It’s beyond embarrassing that the match day officials rightly took time to look at the Murphy yellow card but missed this. There is no rhyme nor reason to how headshots are refereed. It’s basically home crowd howls and inexplicable lapse in concentration that are deciding games.

A piece here on @BelmulletGaa and how the slowing down of emigration has led them to the cusp of a Mayo final. So many of them ended up picking spuds in Lincolnshire, and what GAA piece doesnt be benefit from a Maggie Thatcher anecdote?

Big read here on an abject, rancorous, extraordinary day. The potential scale of fallout to come is the stuff of Saipan 2.0

This is deeply troubling if true. The idea that Bazunu has been left isolated for his courage is appalling.
Extraordinary this from Brian Kerr:
- Spoken with Gavin Bazunu who’s feeling quite low and shunned by players/FAI
- Suggested to him it’d be better he left the squad for remainder of this window
- Wasn’t told about meeting this morning
- Wasn’t there for vote this morning (his vote was assumed by other players)

Excellent story here on the Ireland vs Israel debacle.
Gavin Bazunu being attacked from within the camp is disgraceful. He’s the one person in this whole affair to make a stand on principle.

And so ends the most shambolic day in the history of Irish football. The FAI bereft of leadership and now it appears some players shunning one of their own for taking a stand. What or who does that jersey they’ll wear tomorrow even represent at this stage.
Ten months ago in Hungary Irish football brought pride to a nation, today they are at an all time low. Utterly abject on the field and they stand for nothing off the field too it seems.

Irish team bus parked outside hotel, players inside hotel in meeting. Think we are now in territory of whether this game will go ahead
Just simply a brilliant piece all round with superb research underpinning it.
🤓 This is the statistical comparison of the three nominees for GAA Footballer of the Year, as per this morning’s @irish_news @irishnewssport
Jack Carney does get a raw deal on numbers because his role is so different.

You can go around in circles and present different arguments, but when you dig deep as I did (watching all 650 possessions of the 3 nominees), there is a frontrunner for Footballer of the Year.
