Writing is the superpower of humankind. It is our truest form of magic. Writing allows you to conjure up something of value where nothing previously existed. It costs little for you to write down the lessons of your life and yet those few minutes spent writing can be life-altering for the right reader. As I once saw it put: "there is someone out there with a wound in the exact shape of your words." Furthermore, writing is the foundation of nearly every technology and innovation because we have to record what we know before we can build upon it. And these innovations are passed down from generation to generation, allowing our children to inherit a richer intellectual fortune than what we were born into. The world is richer because we write and nobody is made poorer in the process.

The five daily prayers are the most sophisticated anti-elite mechanism ever designed. Every system of knowledge in human history has been gatekept. You want philosophy learn Greek. You want law go to the academy. You want spirituality find the monastery, pay the priest, climb the hierarchy. Knowledge as power has always flowed through institutions that could be captured, corrupted, or bought. Islam said : five times a day, every Muslim on earth stands in the exact same posture, says the exact same words, faces the exact same direction, with zero intermediary. The shepherd in Mali and the caliph in Baghdad are doing the identical act. No priest can sell you access. No institution can revoke your membership. No scholar can stand between you and the prayer. The ulema exist, the imams exist but the core transaction between the believer and Allah requires nothing they can provide and nothing they can withhold. 1400 years later every other spiritual tradition is struggling with institutional collapse, abuse scandals, gatekeeping accusations. Islam built the decentralization solution into the architecture from day one.

Books are compressed experience and not just knowledge. Someone spent decades of their life making mistakes, which you could avoid by just reading up on it for few hours. You get to read and test it in a instant, rather than have come up with solution through long experimentation. Insisting on learning everything personally is just a stupid expression of ego.

Have an alternative plan. Something in reserve. Money. Information. Social goodwill. If you operate at full exposure all the time, you will be devastated when conditions change. Build reserves by calculating for worse conditions, because fortune will smack you once in a while.

To all my bros: Bring back your prime one more fcking time. Your parents are getting older, and no one is more desperate to see you succeed than they are. Everything can wait, I repeat, everything. But not your parents. So fck everything and do it for them.

There are moments when anger feels entirely justified. Someone has been careless, disrespectful, unfair, or simply irritating. I can make a perfectly reasonable case for why I am angry. But that is probably the moment to be most suspicious of it. Marcus Aurelius wrote that anger “begins with madness and ends in regret.” I know the second part well enough. The sharp response feels satisfying for a few seconds. Then comes the discomfort of having behaved beneath myself. Sometimes even the humiliation of having to explain or apologize afterwards. What interests me more is his claim that “the nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strength.” I keep returning to that definition of strength. If another person can disturb my inner state so easily, how much command do I really have over myself? Sister Elizabeth Kenny put it more simply: “He who angers you, conquers you.”

The real purpose of wealth is to have the calm to live your life your way. It's to have the freedom to slow down. To spend your days doing things that you actually care about. That’s what money is really for. Not to impress strangers. Or to collect expensive distractions. But to own your time. To have a quiet breakfast without checking emails. Long dinners without looking at the clock. Conversations without feeling rushed. A calm weekend without thinking about the spreadsheet you need to turn in on Tuesday. Time to read. To think. To explore your interests. That’s real wealth. Everything else is noise.
